So i'm wanting too apply in New Mexico for an elk tag but don't know anything about it or where the better units are. I am a DIY backpack hunter, prefer wilderness type area's, if anyone could help me out pleas PM me. Thanks

I would check the states web site under stats, that should give you a lot of info. that is what i do on other states. and if you look down through elk hunting on here there has been quite a few threads on NM units.
i have done a little checking on MN myself, but i don't like the idea of only a 5 day hunt for a $700.00 + tag, if i am spending that much on a tag, i want more then a 5 day hunt. JMO.

I am applying for my tag this year also. I am going with a guide, the application needs to be in before April 7. As I researched where i wanted to go and with whom I learned quite a bit about the northern part of the state. Unit 52 and 51 both looked real good. Eastman's Bowhunting Journal has New Mexico in the MRS section this month that might also help a little. Good luck!
