I am hunting fall turkeys in PA and was wondering other's experiences with busting turkeys off the roost and then calling them back in. I have not tried it yet, but some friends say it doesn't work too well because the turkeys tend to fly out together thus, not being broken up. Others say it has worked for them. What do you think?

PS... I am assuming it is not a game law violation to do this???

Had a friend that went muzzleloader hunting sat at daybreak and heard a flock of turkeys on the roost. He flushed them off the roost and called back with success. Anytime
you make a turkey call in the woods be prepared for the turkey to come.
Never establish what the turkeys are going to do because of ###### or age, because
they will do the opposite. Always be prepared cause before you know it you could hear
a cluck and the turkey is already looking at you and you don't have a clue where the turkey is. HAHA been caught myself a few times. GOOD HUNTING !!!

in my mind you get the best scatters busting them and daybreak they tend to go everywere! and alot easier calling them back

When calling them back, is it better to sound like an older hen or a lost poult? I know the kee kee run if you want to sound like a poult, is there a particular call the older hen does to call the poults back?

I tried a roost bust a few years ago, they went in all sorts of directions but when I started calling with them, they all flew back in and landed in the trees all around me. I'm not the type of person who shoots a bird off the roost. If I have a flock roosted, I'll set decoys out about 50 yards from the roost and normally they will fly down into them. Good luck.

when they fly back in and land in trees you are in for the long haul. these are turkeys that have played the game before. and can give you a battle, the boss hen will frustrate you all day flying up and calling all her young back offering you not one ethical shot. they regroup and can be gone in a flash. if you hear the boss hen up in the tree flush her again or imatate her every call and make her mad so she will fly down and pop her. good luck

What about locateing the birds, is it the same as in the spring or something else.

Try to locate the flock the afternoon before you hunt and see where they roost. If the flock is big, they'll make a racket flying up for the night so keep your ears open.
