First let me admit to being a little tired of the standard options for the caliber of rifles out on the market. Yes I own nearly 30 centerfire rifles ranging from .22-250 to .300 wsm and the old .45-70. With most being bolt action their are a few lever guns and one single shot and one auto loader represented.
My question is I have been interested in purchasing a .358 winchester I know the factory options are limited with ruger being the only factory option out there. But I want to have one built or buid one myself and handloading ammo will not be a problem either. Does anyone on here have any experience with the .358 winchester? Any info good or bad is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I dont have any experience with that cal. either but been thinking of getting something in it too. I think ill probably get it in that Browning lever gun.
If you get it, post some results on how it shoots if you dont mind. Thanks.
Dale.

Oh yeah Forgot about the browning BLR! I have yet to see one of those rifles in person. I have been thinking about saving up a couple grand and having Melvin Forbes of New Ultra Light Arms build me a bolt action with a short barrel say 20 inches long. If that don't workout I have also thought about having a Remington model 7 rebarreled to .358. If i had a lathe I could do the work myself and save money but the lathe is still on my to own before I die list.
I will post any info I can but it will more than likely be after the first of the year before I make my mind up.

i know it's your gun, and these are just curiosity questions, but why build a bolt action rifle with a caliber like the .358? that BLR in a takedown model would be neat. but with other available 35's why use the 358. i just think if you build a bolt action gun you'll find that the gun will do more than the cartridge is capable of. with that said. i bet it would make a nice shooting, moderate recoil, nice little rifle. whatcha lookin to knockdown with it?

Delagrouch,
1. Let me admit I own a .35 Rem (marlin 336), and two .35 Whelens (Rem 700) (Ruger m77 Hawkeye).
2. I must confess to being drawn to the cartridges that never caught on.
3. I have looked at the BLR rifles and almost ordered one once but backed out. I never really fell in love with the BLR partly due to never knowing anyone who had or shot one. The takedown option on these rifles is a good idea but with the abuse I deal to most rifles I feel as if it would be a liability.
4. My reason for wanting a bolt gun is ease of maintenance and cleaning. Oh and I dont think the BLR is offered in a synthetic stock which is a must for me.
5. And if I get it built or do it myself then I can have it made to suit me.
Lastly It wil be used to help thin the local infestation of feral hogs and the occasional whitetail deer!!

out to a couple hundred yds. that ought to be a pig thumpin machine. personally i'm a little recoil shy, but this cartridge should be sweet in an ultra light action. do you reload? if not ammo selection may be limited. sounds like you already own a few rifles to get the job done. so if this tool is for "you" and your intrigued by the round, go for it. i've only shot it out of a lever gun with open sights, and never anything more lively than a filled milk jug. (tore that up though.) if you don't mind let me know how your selection process goes. i always love hearing about new toys.

I do reload on a occasion but plan to ramp up some this spring. I am thinking about buying a model 7 before the end of the year and hopefully have it rebarreled in early spring and adding accessories soon after. I really want one of melvins rifles but cannot afford one yet and my patience will not allow me to save up for one. I will post any updates as they come available.

I have a M700 Classic 35 Whelen and have taken 17 WT deer and a 250 lb black bear.
It is a hammer on game and the 358 Win would be no different. I used the Rem 200 gr PSPCL the first two years killing 4 bucks and then switched to the Nosler 225 gr PT.
I only had 2-3 blood trails to follow, but they were short and heavy. All the rest, including the bear dropped in their tracks.
