Last fall I took a nice grizzly with my dad. Had it dead on at 9 yards but I didn't have a slot to slide an arrow through. The bear circled us and when it came into the open at 90 yards I put a 30-06 had load though both lungs. It went about 50 yards and started rolling on its back in the sand on the side of the river. It paused, lying on its side with its back to me at 120 yards and I put a follow up round through its hump and out through the chest, catching both lungs. The bear jumped up, over a windfall, and up a bank so fast I could hardly believe it. We gave the bear 2.5 hours and circled around where it had gone it the bush. We found it lying in wait on its backtrail waiting for us. I out my third round into it quarting away hard on 6 yards away. I squated down to shoot so the bullet entered just infront of its hind and exited the neck on the far side. The bear stood up and tried to charge but it couldn't get through the bush at me. It dove under a log and set up to get us again. We gave it another hour and then went back in. When we got to about 10 yards it stood up on its hind legs and I put two shots into its chest. It tipped backwards, then got back up!! So I put one more into its chest putting it down for good. The last three shots entered the chest in a 3 inch group and two broke the spine exiting.
The bear was 9'9' nose to tail and 10' 3'' from front claw to front claw once skinned and lied flat.
NOW THE COOL PART:
We couldn't believe how agressive and hard to die the bear was, even for grizz!!!! I took the skull out of my flesh eating beatles the other day and found a BULLET HOLE in its skull, half way up the crown. My calipers tell me its .308 cal and the shatered bone has HEALED OVER!!! The bullet must have bounced off but it still shatered the skull for about half and inch around the impact point. I asked a local wildlife expert at the university and he said the hole was 2 years old or so.
