Just was curious to what your favorite breed of dog was for hunting and why? I'm looking at getting another dog sometime in the future. If you want to share a pic of your dog or the breed of your dog that would be great too! Thanks and wish you and your partner a happy hunting year! smile.gif

My black lab Harley, does a great job! He is great at retrieving pheasants and he is starting to point for me so a black lab would a good choice for ya. Good Luck. Hope you find a good one.

i have to disagree on the most versatile dog statement. i had a jack russel terrier. i know not your standard hunting dog by any means but he was "smart" enough to hunt anything. he treed squirrels, he would climb trees to get them. he'd bust bunnies out of brush. flush pheasants and grouse. even retrieved a couple wood ducks for me. we also used him for trailing wounded whitetails. the only problem was he wasn't prejudiced , he hunted every thing we came across. i've killed more woodchucks with a stick than most guys have with a rifle. he only got into itt with a skunk once. after that he let me know they were around from a distance. unfortunately his lust for hunting was his demise. he went into a coyote den, and i couldn't dig him out in time. i have a little consolation in the fact that Simon was a warrior and he went out doing what he loved. i now own a dual purpose lab/golden retriever he flushes birds, and retrieves ducks/geese. i've also owned a few beagles. loved them all. all of my dogs were as much companions as hunting dogs.

i'm not knockin the GERM's at all. the germ's i hunted with were better pheasant dogs than any i've ever owned. and they would go all day.

p.s. now that i live in the "stupid" city my bird dog is constantly getting tormented by the local fox squirrels. maybe he'll start treeing them for me this fall.

Best dog hands down is a Pudelpointer.

Beagle all the way. But I like to rabbit hunt.

Bird dog? I would say my favorite is the Boykin Spaniel. I have had two over the years and both were smarter than I am. They are a beautiful dog too.

I own 2 labs, one is a non-hunter, the other hunts. He mainly hunts pheasants, I haven't got in to duck hunting ....yet. Can he out last a GSP? Maybe not, but he can hold his own. He also points, I never trained him to do it, it just happend. I took him out and he locked up, and he's done it ever since, I also keep him on the lean side .......Here's a few pics in the field

Hungarian Vizla. Best bird dog I have ever owned and I have owned and bred Brittany spaniels, German shorthairs, and a beagle.

English lab!
AR-VARMINTER
I have had English Setters that were excellent for bird hunting and over the years 5 Labs which I loved for retrieving and duck hunting. I now have my first Lab who is what the call a pointing lab. Her point is fantastic and she will point birds as well as a tremendous retriever. Got her in Illinois. Her pop is a national champion. (Pointing LAB.) She is truly a dual purpose dog and great pet.

wel i would have to say golden retreiver but my personal favorite is now dead he was a mix between german shepherd, husky, and somethin else. he was the best dog ever he was a rabbit dog, a bird dog, a deer dog, a gaurd dog, a family dog, he could do anything any other breed of dog could and b4 he was hit by a car we were teachin him to jump over stuff we would get like a small tree and put it bout 3ft off the ground and he would run and jump over it. he was the greatest dog ever it makes me very sad he was hit, he was the smartest dag i ever seen

I got a vizla and she is a great bird dog. She is really smart too. The only problem is she is gun shy. She points perfect but if any loud noise goes off her tail goes between her legs

Depends on what you want to hunt.....Pheasant/quail/chuckar/prarie chicken/duck----->German Wirehaired Pointer gets my vote.

Another vote for German Shorthaired Pointers, best dogs I've ever hunted over.
