i have a weatherby 240 mag and was told it was a good deer rifle. does anyone have any suggestions on a load they would use or if they would not bother deer hunting with it. the factory bullets shoot ok but not to my satisfaction maybe a 2inch group at 100 yards i could use the help the weatherby bullets are over 50 dollars a box

First of all the 240 Wby Mag is probably one of the best deer/antelope cartridges on the market. I hunt all big game with my Weatherybys (257,270, 300) unless I am hunting where my shots will be under 100 yards, then I use one of brush guns. A friend of mine handloads I believe 95 gr Nosler Balistic tips for his 240 and it gives him good results. You are just going to have to play with a few loads to see what works best for your rifle.

JME but wby's benefit a great deal from handloading due to the ability to tailor bullet and loads to the gun. 2" isn't that bad my 300wby would better 2" with factory loads and I tried a couple (just to get some brass for loading..long story wink.gif ).Not to mention the cost factor in buying wby brand or other OTC ammo for the bee.

In terms of deer it is more then up to the task. I'd be looking at a 95gr bullet, which one would depend on the range and shot placement of the hunter in question. BT for longer range (200 and beyond the norm) and/or behind the shoulders. NP, barnes, etc if short range is as possible as long and /or a pin shooter (shoulders).

Should be a good choice with the .240. I have worked a lot with the Barnes TSX and found I could get it shooting very well in a number of rifles. Works darn good on game too.

Being new to reloading (assume you'll be reloading in this case), seating depth may not mean much now but barnes aren't like other copper/core bullets, need to be backed off the lands(rifling) a touch more due increased pressure. Barnes includes this info in each box of bullets with the recommended seating depths. Shouldn't be a problem with the wby due to the free bore but it may & in your other rifles it likely will come into the equation. Just follow their recommendations and you'll be good.

Good luck

Thank you i will keep that in mind

I think someone needs to change their name from Bulldancer to Bullchitter.

The .240 Weatherby Magnum is not the worlds greatest deer cartridge, as you have already found out.

2 inch group at 100 yards is not a very good group. More like a shotgun pattern.

$50 a box for shells to shoot a 40 - 180 pound deer is no bargain. The shells is worth more than the meat.

I can shoot 2 or 3 times as many rounds in my .270 / 30-06 for the same amount of money, depending on what time of the year it is and what the market price is - for 30/06 - .270 Winchester shells. / I do not have to subject my shoulder to the recoil of a magnum load.

I always tell my friends, Dead is Dead! It don't matter if you kill a deer with a .22 short or a .416 Rigby, Dead is Dead! How dead do you want to kill this deer? How big a hole do you want to blow in this deer? How badly do you want to impress your friends with your .45/70 Buffalo gun? Dead is Dead!

I have shot .243 Winchester round - in the cheapest guns made - that would group 3/4 of one inch at 200 yards with a factory load Remington shell and a cheap 3x9x40 scope.

he never said it was the best. if you read the post and stop changing peoples words he said on of the best. and that's his opinion there's no need to say he's wrong he's entitled to his own opinion. if i was to say that the 300 Win mag is one of the best rounds for elk would you get on my case? just food for thought wink.gif

oh and yes dead is dead... that's why the call it dead!
