We do a good bit of rabbit huntin after deer season goes out, and I usually use 7.5 or smaller and 20 gauge or smaller.

Most of the shots you get are gonna be purty close (within 20 yards or so) and a 12 gauge is really too much gun- tears em up too bad.

Here in Nebraska i do a lot of bunny blasting with my bro-inlaw and we both use #6 shot from Remington at 1200 feet per second mod choke 12 guage, we hunt only when there is snow on the ground and the winter has killed the brush somewhat.
lots of fun!!!!

Yea right on...My dad and I got 5 rabbits and 1 ruffed grouse. I was using a Ithaca m37 16 gauge, with Federal high brass 1 1/8 ounce #6's. My dad was using CZ Ringneck .410, with Remington 3" 11/16 ounce #6's. Both were great guns for the type of hunting we were doing(kicking on thorn bushes).

Also we were hunting in February in Southern Tier NY. So either an IC or a Mod choke work great. If you were hunting in the fall, then an IC choke would be max for thick woods. I don't know if that's different from hunting with dogs but that's what works best without dogs.

Hope it helps!! smile.gif

I have had beagles for a long time.I own four right now and work in constuction so every year I am off during hunting season.I have a 7 year old and 3 that is 3 years old.Last year me and my cusion that works with me killed 66.I always use number 6 shot whether it be 12 gauge or 20.But I live in ky and hunt thick stuff.Sometimes I think it has better peneatrion than 71/2 shot.Last year I started useing low brass 6 shot from Walmart in the box with the red stripe that says heavy dove.It is about half the price and has a little less kick. Most of the time I use a over and under.MY oldest dog is named king on his papers it says Kings Tracer.Last year he pack me back alot of rabbits as long as the young dogs didnt try to take it from him.I have always loved rabbit hunting and always will however I have started coyote hunting and like it to.

I Just use a .22 or if i do use a shotgun i would probably go with 6. Good Luck
delagrouch
i use low brass 6's and high brass 7.5's. if pheasant and squirrel are in season i use high brass 4's. sometimes i carry 2 sticks about 20" long. last year i got 2 with the throwing sticks. I dont hunt with dogs when i'm using them, i still hunt like i would for dear. max range is a bout 25'. it's probably not considered to humane, unless i hit em in the head, i have to run up on them and finish them off.

i would like to see yall try to hit a rabbit with them 22's when they are ahead of my beagles, and the 12 gauge guys that would ruin a rabbit, i use a 4-10 with #6's
Hammer 2
Back when I hunted by my self alot when I had dogs I killed more rabbits with a .22 than you could fit in a truck. I never shot at one when we first jump. I let the dogs do their thing and the rabbit will slip back where you jumped him. Most of the time shots would be very close and some times standing. So the .22 was perfect. When hunting with a group of guys it's always a 20 gauge with a good load of #6's.

with the dogs that i have the rabbit dont have time to sit still for a shot with a 22, but to each his own
littlespur
I use a 3 inch 20 gauge shot gun bullet.
Bring 'em In
I usually use my youth model 20 gauge 870 with a 22 inch barrel. I shoot #6's. I like that gun because it is light and I kiles my first quail, pheasant, and turkey with it.
