Was looking at my new cabelas shooting magazie and thinking of getting a bipod for my .223. I shoot alot with this gun at the range. I've wanted a bi-pod for a while and was wondering what you guys use and if you like fixed or the pivoting ones better. Also what height do you use for bench shooting and prairie dog shooting. Want some advice before I spend the money on one.

Zagman,
I prefer the Harris BR Model Bi-pod. And I am not a fan of the swivel model. I have been a law enforcement rifle instructor for years and have found that a shooter has enough going on without the need to control the swivel movement on a swivel Bi-pod. This considering everything we do must be 1MOA or less in accuracy. My LE Sniper Team shot snaps and movers as well as random pop-ups with the BR fixed model for years and done very well winning the 2001 World Police and Fire Games SWAT Competition held in Indianapolis Indiana with the Harris BR Model Bi-pod. 6"-9". You will also need to decide if you like the pre-set click elevation unit or the unit where you lock the elevation legs of the unit with screw in Lock Knobs. The theory is the closer to the ground the more accurate the system will be. I use a shooting stick for higher elevations on varmint hunting. Some guys like the swivel units and that is fine if they can accurately use it.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply... I also use shooting sticks for ground hunting, this will be mostly for the bench and eventually prairie dog hunting. With the 6-9 can u use a rear sandbag for bench shooting? Thanks again for the reply I appreciate it.

Zigman,
Yes, you sure can use a sand bag or bean bag for the rear. I carry one of the home made bean bags in my varmint equipment back pack when I go out. Or sometimes the double fist of your week hand will work if you do not have a bag with you.
On the bench this combination is very stable. Normally less than an MOA if using a good rifle with good ammo and you on a good day.

Thanks,
I have a fairly good rifle, its a weatherby sub moa and it will shoot most ammo at an inch or a little over. I'm no snipper, but a decent shot. I really apreciate this, think i'm going to get the harris bipod. Originally I was thinking 9-13", but you talked me into the shorter 6-9" fixed. thanks again.

i would give versa pod a look too. they're very good quality about the only bipod company that i think is just as good as harris's. the way they attach is quite unique and is why i like them, they slide on/off an attachment on your gun in a matter of seconds and you can get multiple attachments and use the same bipod on different guns with ease. just another option.

Harris the bipod that all others want to be.
