What are the best hunting dogs that are good with families? I like to hunt everything from coons, squirrels, ducks, geese, and whatever else. I am hoping to buy a new dog soon so I need help.

how much do Labs cost?
Bring 'em In
The chocolate lab I have now is a great hunter and I bought her for $35. She even points! You aren't going to find many prices as good as $35. Average is probably $150 but they can be less and more. The price is determined by how good of a blood line you want. Good luck!

If you want a lab with good blood lines, you will pay a lot more than 150 bucks, it will be more like 500-600 minimum for a pup, plus you have to put the time in to train them on how and what you want them to hunt as well with food, vet visits ,heart worm meds, flea and tick treatment, leashes, collars, training dummies, birds.... the list goes on..... your looking to spend 1000-1500 the first year easy.....not just on a lab any hunting dog will cost you this kind of money....just make sure you prepare yourself for this kind of investment.

I'm not knockin getting a pup for less than that I've seen lab mixes taken from the pound and be good hunting dogs, but if you go for purebred, it will be more money, thats my main point....

There is nothingwrong with paying that much but I'm not going too. I have 2 pointers and a lab that I have paid a total of $135 for. This doesn't include training but I love seeing my dogs hunt with very expensive dogs because my dogs are almost always better. Instead of spending tons of money, buy a AKC registered pup for about $150,$200 and put time into the dog by working with a wing and frozen birds.

Bring'em, your absolutley right its all in the training, regardless of what you pay wink.gif I have 2 labs, Got one for 350, and the second I got at a D.U. banquet.

MOst of haveing a good dogs is establishing a good relationship with your dog, he needs to trust you and know when you send him their is something to pick up.

I have owned two choc labs.I paid $ 400.00 for one and 150 for my current. Didn't have any problems with either of them. Great around kids and infants. They love people, sometimes too much.LOL. Easy to train. My former lab hunted water fowl goose and duck. Upland birds and went on a few fall turkey hunts with me. But strangers shouldn't take their easy goin attitude as a weakness either. They will protect you and your family also. And believe me they mean business. Love em and wont own any other kind of dog. Good luck with whatever kind of dog you get. And more money doesn't always mean a better dog. wink.gif

I like labs, too, but you threw in coons, squirrels and "whatever else"...

If you want the best "all -around" dog, you want a Cur... period... they will coon, hog, squirrel hunt and still retrieve....

easy to train, great with family, in the blood to hunt, and will do it all....

Black Mouth is what I would go with... ever seen "Ole Yeller"? - enough said.

The Cur is a great dog for coon, squirrel and it is a great companion for a young hunter.
And don't forget about the good old Rabbit Beagle In all probability the most common and popular hunting dog ever. I love Wabbit Beagles!
