I have both the lil dog and the hot dog. Both work very well but the lil dog is a bit more easy to blow.

Really? I have more trouble with the lil dog. Have you tried bending the reed backwards? I seen MR! Anderson do that on one of his videos, said it would help break them in. It seemed to work with mine and I was pretty skeptical and a little worried Id break it. But I dont have to overwork myself while blowing it.just a thought.

The first thing i would start with is taking off that barrel, i think the call sounds better with it off and it's still plenty loud. Mouth placement is important too, at the most you need is only half or a little less in your mouth to produce a nice sounding howl. The more of the call in your mouth the deeper the sound and conversely the less in will produce a higher pitch. I've read others, and it may mention it on the package about teeth. My teeth never touch my call just my lips, but thats just me, we're all a little different in how we call, keep at it, try different things, and you'll soon find what works for you. Hope this helps a little.
