Well, after a month of archery season and no deer, didn't even see a buck, then with a little over a week left of rifle season here in NW Montana, I finally got my buck. I've only seen one other buck besides this one, and he was a tiny little 2x2. I've been out about 15 times, and never even seen a doe. I think the wolves have really hurt the deer population here. Anyhow, after I got my oldest daughter on the bus this morning, I took off for a morning hunt. The area I decided to hunt gets a lot of weekend pressure, but not much during the week. So I walked back in about 2 miles, found a nice little meadow on the edge of some timber, and got me some cover and sat down. I have always shot my buck before the rut starts, so I had no idea how to call them in. So about a week ago, I read on this forum how to bleat a few times, then wait a few seconds, then follow it with a few grunts. Ok, I decided to give it a shot. I got my Primos Hands free Buck and Doe call, and I did that sequence once, then waited about 15 minutes and did it again. Then I heard some twigs snapping, some grass rustling......oh boy, here he comes!!!! Couldn't beleive it!! It worked! I called one in! I put the gun up, and see he is a 5x5 (10 point for some of ya!! wink.gif ) with a HUGE body. That is all I need to know. I click off the safety, and BOOM!!!! shot him in the neck. He did a back flip, twitched a few times, and then was still. YAY!!! I got him!! I was shocked at his body size. wow. So I rolled him over, gutted him out, then the fun began. I drug him downhill a couple hundred yards when I realized I still had 1.5 miles to go to the truck. So, I tape the trees so I can find him, and go get the hubby and the game cart. Well, run into one little problem. No babysitter for the 3 year old. Looks like she is going with. So I piggy-back her in, get some pics, and drag the buck to the game cart. On the way out, my 3 year old daughter rode the deer out. It was GREAT!! What a day, and what a hunt. Thanks to all of you guys for your input on how to call them in. It works!!! Sorry about the blood, it was a neck shot.......

Congrats awesome deer!!! Looks like the young'n is having fun, shes got the easy way out of the woods. Thats great anytime you can get the kids out in the woods you should these times should be cherished they are only young once. If possible I always let my young'n track the deer. Becuse it wont be long and he'll be track'n his own deer. I'll bet this is a hunt you'll never forget. Has your husband shot his deer yet? If not good luck to him and congrats again thats a great story, thanks for sharing it

First off congrats on a very nice buck. I also want to say thank you for a great story & the photo's were great. I think the way you are raising your kid is awesome, and you should be very proud of yourself. I have three daugthers myself, and I try to encourage them all to go hunting with me. Well I just hope that I can harvest a nice buck like that one this year.
Drop-time
Awesome job! I like the pic with your daughter in the cart. Ive been known to pack my kids in/out of the timber as well (when they were younger). Super nice buck.
Yep callin can work great this time of year. Glad to see you had success with it!!

Thanks everyone! I am sure happy to have gotten this deer, but I wish my season wasn't over...... sad.gif Oh well, still have an elk tag to fill!!! Or I could go with the hubby and call one in, show him how it's done LOL wink.gif

Way to go. Congrats on the awesome buck. It is cool to see ya getting the youngin invovled. Are you only allowed one deer per season? I would think that you would have a higher bag limit than that in MT. Well anyways go get a big elk now.

Thanks, yeah, there is a one buck limit, and in my area one doe limit. The doe tags for this area are draw only, but some of the surrounding areas are over the counter doe tags. Hard to fill the freezer on 2 deer! smile.gif

Nice ,thats a good looking deer.I wish I could get my wife to hunt. Can't hardly get my boys to go with me. When they were little they seemed to love it,but as they got a little older seems they could take it or live it.Kinda dis hearting but I dont want them to be me. You have to be who you are i guess. Great job and nice pic's.

Nice buck congrat's. Get them involved early. The little one is a cutey. My daughter is calling in my spring gobbler next spring. Told her I'll call one in for her. But she has to call mine in. I fear she may be more of a hunting addict than I am. LOl. Nice deer mam.
