I am new to hunting predators, and was looking to get a 308 for its long range capabilities as well as its versatility as a big game gun as well. I was wondering if this would be a little much for predators and if so what would be a good gun for long distance shooting? any help would be great.

308 a is heavy for varmits, why not a 243 where you shoot 55 grains for varmits and a heavier load for deer.

you could go cruise remington.com's ballistic chart and see which smaller caliber shoots flattest.

I shoot win .243, 55 or 58gr for coyotes and a good 95-100gr for deer. works great.

Pends on rather you want to do anything with the pelts. The venerable old .308 will sure do the job on about anything you want to shoot. But you will ruin some hair with it on a poor old coyote. Kill all them yotes.

I shoot a .22-250 for deer and coyotes. It is a fast, flat shooting caliber and does little pelt damage. However, some states have caliber limits for deer, so be sure to check those! As with ANY caliber on ANY game, it is all about shot placement.

if you reload your own ammo then get the 308 because you can get bullets that are 110 grns for varmits

I shoot a .223 for varmint hunting and I have found that it is not bad for big game hunting. The .223 is also very excellent out to 500 yds, maby farther depending on certain variables.
