I am looking for a good varmit call to buy. Does anybody have any suggestions or recommendations? I am interested in getting a rabit in destress call.
My Uncle was tellin me about a call that you can switch from a cotton tail, jack rabbit, and a squeeker all in one hand call. Does anybody know who makes that or any info at all about that?

If I could only pick one call it would be the li'l dog from Randy Anderson. Two mouth peices, in close or longer range, horn or no horn. you can do all howls, all distresses, and even comes with a demo cd so you can hear what it really should sound like& all for about $20. Check out "callingallcoyotes" under specials. you can even get a combo dvd with the call. good luck

you have high hopes... you want a hand held, not electronic, but you want to make all the different sounds...
I would have suggested the little dog, too, if you want just one call, but then you aren't willing to switch pieces...
So, you want one call to do it all without ever having to change anything??? Good luck...
I think the pyshco tweety for verminator is going to be your best bet... it has two reeds and will produce a few different sounds without moving stuff...
but if you really want to make the different sounds you are either going to have to adjust reed setting, switch mouth pieces, or buy different calls... or go with an electronic.... oh, and Practice, practice practic.

I do have the Power Dogg electronic call but some of the sounds on there are just not loud enough in some cases.
I went out with my uncle a few weeks ago and we were using the Power Dogg and it wasnt quite loud enough and he had to use his hand call to reach out there and called in yotes using his hand call but we still had the Power Dogg running on a low volume and it worked great.
My uncle said to get this one hand call that does 3 different sounds with just a twist in the mouth piece. he said its a little green hand held call that does cotton tail, jack rabbit, and mouse squeek. Ive been trying to find that one but I cant remember what it was called. If I do I will post some links to it. Supposedly its a badass little call and works supreme-o!!!

well, why didn't you say so to start with that you were looking for a specific call...
the calls you are referring to are the "circe" series by Lohman... they have been around forever and they are proven performers... easy to use, last a long time, cheap, and they work great....
there are actually several different models in the "circe" series, all have the twist from sound to sound design but have different sounds and volumes... you can find all three here:
http://www.king-cart.com/cgi-bin/cart.cgi?...act_match=exactthere are a few other companies that make a version of this type of call as well, but the green ones and the most well known ones are the "Circe"

Hunt 365 is absolutly correct bout the circe call cept forgot to tell you that theyre metal reed and will freeze solid shortly after you breath slobbers in them! I threw my last one off a hill after it called in sick one too many times. Id of mailed it to you and paid the shipping if I had known you wanted one. get the catnip, make it bawl like a baby, prepare to shoot. the lil dog combo cant be beat for makin ALL the sounds from howls to rabbit to fawn bawls and even a pig in distress. and you can be as loud or soft as you want. Besides collectin calls is half the fun!

Now that you've gotten the info on the Circe call & know it will freeze up if the weather gets very cold...
Get an open-reed call & learn to use it!
With most open-reeds, you can, with practice, make cottontail; jack; rodent; kitten; fawn; pig; chicken; goat; sheep; bird trills...oh and howls. All it takes is a decent to great call & practice.
The Lil Dog is a decent production open-reed.
While the Verminator calls are great calls, they aren't quite as versitile in making such varied sounds. And trust me, I'm not knocking them. I own each of them & love them.
Another very good open-reed that has called in more than it's share of critters is the Crit'rCall by Major Boddicker.
Or, for anywhere from $10-$35, you could buy from a custom maker...such as Joe Bradshaw; Tony Tebbe; Kent Constable; Rick Robbins; Kerry Carver; Rudy Calderone...just to name a few.

The little dog has a very good tone board but the reed is too thick for my liking. If you take a sharp blade and thin down the reed some you will be able to make all the sounds you need with that call. It is a very versatile call I have called several coyotes with it after thinning the reed.

For a simple call to use, I love the raspy coaxer, probably cause I used it to call in and kill my first yote. It doesn't do howls, but it is great for rabbit distress and mouse squeaks and very user friendly!

Called in many dogs usin the raspy coaxer, plus its very economical to buy...which is good cuz now I cant find it. I think my huntin buddy was usin it as a kazoo last time i seen it!

I think a good trio would be the Li'l Dog, Ki-Yi, and Catnip. The Ki-Yi can be operated as closed- or open-reed, and that ki-yi sound seems to be very effective. The catnip has also had some excellent reviews, and provides a bit of a different sound to critters that have heard all the standard sounds. The Li'l Dog is very versatile, doing howls, rabbit calls, close or long range, it's just a very versatile call. Once you get those three, STOP!! After that, devote time to mastering them. Randy's "Mastering the Art" CD can give you techniques and what the sounds should sound like. Then go forth and call, and keep doing stands until you call something in! If you are getting collateral contacts, e.g. crows, magpies, hawks, etc, then you are doing it right! I also just bought a Power Dogg, and while I like the sounds, I wish it was louder. Next year I'm gonna pick up a Foxpro FX3 and play with it some. But I will always take my hand calls with me, too!

I just picked up a Catnip within the last hour, and will take it out Wednesday hopefully along with the Power Dogg to see what I can stir up.
