Im wanting a new rifle and one I looked at is a .7mm .08. Its a 308 casing with a 7mm round. I was just wondering if anyone shoots this caliber and how much power it has?

Awesome caliber! I have 2 one in a New England Handi Rifle & one in a Weatherby Vangaurd. Both shoot excellent! Recoil isn't bad. At the range good out to 300 yards. If your a reloader very versatile loading a 100gr to 175gr not good for heavy bullets. I don't go any heavier than 160gr. If you want to shoot factory go with Hornady 139gr SST. Very good for whitetail.
Hope this helps biggrin.gif

What are you planning to hunt with it???

One of my brothers has used one since the early 80s and has killed well over a hundred deer with it...

It is a great gun, and awesome for young hunters and women. It has low recoil with fairly good knock down.

So it dont have the same amount of power as a reg 7mm? Thats what i was wondering. Me and my buddy are doing an elk hunt and I was wanting something with a little more knockdown power than my .270.

RangerGuySC,
You know what they say...The best gun is the one you are most comfortable shooting. Shot placement, shot placement, shot placement. That being said: It's hunting and nothing is perfect be it the angle , distance or even placement. I would go no lighter than a 30cal.
I would probably choose a 30-06. The range of bullet weights will let you shoot anything from a coes deer to an Alaskan moose.
Just my opinion, but I have seen a lot of elk shot and they are one tough critter. We owe it to the animal to put it down as quickly as possible.

wbird,

Don't short change the 7mm-08 now. Compare a 140gr bullet in it and a 180gr bullet in a .30-06 (both being normal bullet weights for caliber), and they both have about the same KE. If you look at Remington's ballistics comparison, the '08 just flies a little faster and shoots a little flatter. What's not to like about it for elk? It's a mild-kicking, hard-hitting round, and lots of folks use it for elk with success. With a good bullet I think both would do just fine.

I know of a website put out by some guy that work for, let's see, is it Premium Hunting calls? rolleyes.gif Or maybe it's called Prime time Hunting calls. laugh.gif Oh, it's called Primos Hunting Calls! biggrin.gif Anyway if you look them up online(I think they might have a website, I wouldn't bet on it) they have one or two videos of themselves shooting elk with Bows and arrows! They must be strong to shoot something as powerful as a 30-06! Oh, and I do not know of a single instance where they lost the game due too poor shot placement or inadequate knockdown power. tongue.gif
In short, if you shoot it in the right spot, it's dead.

Verygood caliber, fast and power full. Shoots flat and will knock down just about anything
