How should i hunt cows and calf's, this is the first year for me hunting elk and i need some info I will be huntin them in the snow the season starts in 19 days biggrin.gif and i would like some pointers please thank you
rezhunter
These moms and kiddys run all over the hills unlike the bulls which stay down low. Might catch one off the road smile.gif In the snow, some times we spook them up right off the road early in morn' and knock em' down, and thier easier to track in the snow. In the snow, we're mainly road huntin, cuz it gets pretty deep off the road. There are places you can walk though, where there is alot of cover. Just like most game, they run around in the morning and evening, and if we can we try and walk and spookem out of where there is alot of cover, xmas trees, thick stuff. Key is just try and be out as often as you can, most of our kills come in the morning.

ok thanks for the info, how high would they be at?

Shoot, right next to the road, so not very high compared to say a canyon--I wouldnt go way deep into a canyon after a cow/calf, you can usually find them in a thick xmas tree area where its think if you want to chase em out. But you can send a couple people down into one if you have the extra help to chasem out During snow, their all over looking for food, good road huntin weather ;-) Just dont hunt morn' and evening, go all day. As anyone would mention be out as often as you can to increase your chances. What area you huntin' anyways?

I'll be over near the santiam pass near hoodoo

thats near my cousins house! But ya, Just move around through the woods. Still be stealth, just hope you sneak up on one. Glass too. Last late season we hiked our butts off, didn't get anything, but we were following a herd and several guys got animals near our camp. Another thing you can do especially if there is lots of other hunters, is just sit and wait. Thats how my dad got his elk this year, and how I got my deer. Anyways, good luck. Let me know how it goes. P.S. Im going on a late season elk hunt first weekend of December as well, last year it was 8degrees, and windy with 6 inches of snow when we came in and 2 that fell during the three days we hunted. !

lol can't blame him he's from portland (those people are mental) and whats wrong with hunting cows

hunting cows is no deal at all but getting "revenge" is not the right term hunting is a sport that was brought up by neccesity, be it cow or yearling calf i don't see any problem with hunting them if it is for the right reasons.

But if you are going to hunt my advise would be to walk most states don't let you "hunt off the road" that is a waste of time. most road hunters are not very successfull, what you need to do is scout before the hunt, watch the elks patterns and research there habits. then when the time comes hunting them is alot easier and you would have earned it. wink.gif

I just saw about 300 elk off the road on the way back from buffalo scouting! laugh.gif The elk will be low if the snow is flying up high!
