Wondering if anyone on here does competition duck calling. Im very interested in getting started. Little bit of guidance if anyone can spare any. I want that world title more than anything. Thanks
adjhunt
I just stared competition calling this last year.
I took first in the Oregon junior duck and 7th in the Novice.

I would recommend getting on callingducks.com
That website has everything you need to know about comp calling. There is also a list of everyone in the world who does comp calling and you can listen to their sound files.
You can also get one their forum and ask this question there. You would probably get a lot more responses there and better information then what I can give.

What duck call are you blowing for comp?
buckslayer_005
yea i been on that website before, i wasnt sure if i would get a response as quick as on here. Well right now i just blow duck commander for hunting only. because that call cant hold the volume that i can put into it without crackin. but when i do get into comp im gonna try an RNT MVP. I dont really like single reed calls but they say thats dang near the best out there. do u have any suggestions? another question.....im pretty fast on a feed call but how in the world do they go that fast? Are they still saying "ticka ticka" like when they are hunting?
adjhunt
Single reeds are a must for contest calling! I've heard the MVP is a great call. I was going to get that, but I ended up getting a Bill Saunders "The Ticket". And I love it! Hunting calls and competition calls are 2 totally different things. I would never take my comp call hunting because it has way to much volume that ducks cannot produce.

First I should ask... Are you wanting to do regular high ball duck calling competition or Meat calling competition?
For meat calling you can use your hunting calls but for comp you need an all acrylic call that can ring out.

And yes for the feed call they are still doing the ticka ticka, but most of them say diga diga as do I.

Do you have a calling routine?

If you want you can record your calling and I can try and help you.

I like the Quakhead J-frame. It is a rnt, but it strings real good, and is pretty easy to blow, and it is only like 20 bucks, which is a good price if you are just starting, you can upgrade as you feel you need to.

That is a decent hunting call, but won't work for competition.

well i havent thought about that, i guess id like to try high ball. is that the one jombo ronquest won two years ago? and the one that john stephens has won 3 times?? id like to do that, but ill have to look into the meat calling as well. whats the difference in that one? does it to see who can call the closest to sounding like a real duck? Man im telling you i try to practice my calling just about everytime i get in my truck! i love it! that sounds awesome, what do i record it on? as for the routine i havent really put one together because i wasnt sure if there is a certain order that calls have to be made in. see....these are questions that i have been needing people to answer
adjhunt
Yes the Competition duck calling is what John and Jim have won. The difference between Comp calling and meat calling is that in comp you are seeing how perfect you can blow the call and consistent you can be. In meat calling you are trying to sound like a flock of ducks on the water.
I'll try and make a basic routine so that you can get the idea of comp calling routine.
Don't have time right now, but I'll be back on later.

You can use whatever call you want for comp... I think the fact that is was cheap was the point... sure, it's not the best comp call out there, but why spend $$ on a call that isn't good for hunting if you don't even know if you are going to enjoy competition yet?

Buckslayer,
I suggest that you go to a few competitions and just watch... that way you know how they work and what to expect, plus talk to some of the guys calling and the judges... this will give you an idea of if you are realistically good enough to compete or not yet... if you think you can compete and you think you will enjoy it, then go ahead and try...

as far as calls, when you are ready to spend a little money on a good call these are hard to beat:

yea for the last couple of years ive been to the worlds and seen parts of the competition, this year i want to go and watch the entire thing. I have to be realistic about this too. I dont expect to win it right away. i know that its going to take some long hours and some hard work and determination but i truly think i have what it takes to later down the road win that trophy. What can i say its my passion so im up for it

I wasn't saying that it was a bad call or that it won't work for meat calling. I said it won't work for Comp calling. It doesn't have the volume need to have a ringing hail. And if he wants to go on and win the worlds then he is going to need a call that is top of the line to compete with those other guys.

I think its great you have this passion, and with it, you should go far!

I'll try and write out a routine for you later today so that you can be practicing.

man i appreciate it.

Man mine will, It will produce those extremly loud, stringing hail calls that you want in competion, and with out alot of air pressure. As for the whole top of the line thing it comes out ot the same factory as rnt's and made to the same speculations, the only reason it is cheap is because it is polycarb. and has the quackhead name. But it is all about what you like and waht sounds good to you, and what you have conf. in.
adjhunt
Here is a routine you can practice with.

man i appreciate it, i got one question though. usually when a person calls their air gradually decreases as the call is being made, so im kinda wondering how the step up is supposed to sound
adjhunt
Yea I kinda messed up on that... I'll try and make a recording of what it should be...
