i'm thinking of purchasing a 204 ruger for a tc prohunter. i'm not worried about ammo due to i reload my own ammo. i'm just wondering how much pelt damage there would be on fox and coyote?

I think since you reload your own ammo it may be a trial and error sort of thing. The 204 is a very fast bullet. Though I don't have that caliber myself I think if you use that caliber with a light weight balistic tip bullet you will have a small entry hole and take away the chance of an exit hole. Thats a good question!!!!!

I don't own a .204 but know those who do. The problem with poly tipped bullets is splashing. A splash is when you hit bone and the bullet blows up on impact. You'll have a softball sized entry wound. That said you'll be fine with frontal chest shots which are common when calling yotes. You'll also be fine on on broadsides just so you don't hit the front leg or shoulder.

I've had splashes with my .223 and 22-250. All were poly tipped bullets and were either spine or shoulder hits. They were NASTY to say the least.

We don't have foxes here so I have no experience with them at all.

Bullet placement is the name of the game. Hit bone ya gots problems don't matter what you shoot. Let me just say this: My Savage model 12 is a super accurate little gun. I hand load. It is the funnest calibre I have ever fired. Through the glass you get to see what is happening on the other end due to low recoil. The little gun just doesn't jump off target. You get to watch rodents fly, explode, or what ever. I shoot Sierra 39 grain blitz kings at 3400 feet per second. smile.gif

39 grain blitz kings are awesome bullets.

I think the .204 is to much for fox IMO.

the 204 is a perfect fox gun, shoot the light v-max's and you'll have that tiny entrance and no exit, shot one this summer through the shoulers and it blew the lungs to jelly smile.gif no exit
