Full Version: Hunting In The Rain

I was desperate to get into the stand so I decided to give it a shot in the rain. It wasn't a hard rain but not a drizzle. I've heard the deer will move when its raining as long as its not a pour down. However, I didn't see jack. I mean nothing..no squirrels, no deer, no raccoons, nothing. Anyone else have any experience with hunting in the rain and can ya tell me is it worth trying in the future or am I just climbing a tree to get wet?

And yeah I just realized I posted in wrong forum but I don't know how or if you can move the post without re-typing it and I'm too tired to re-type it right now.

I know what you mean! I have hunted in an all out down pour and seen deer, and hunted in a slight drizzle and seen nothing. I have also hunted them in the middle of a snow storm and there was deer EVERYWHERE! Yesterday (just HAD to get out!) I went hunting and the wind was blowing like crazy, and I really didn't expect to see anything, but hey, I was out there. But I was able to get within 40 yards of a doe, she never gave me a shot, but at least I seen something! I don't know what goes through those deers' minds! I guess that is why it is hunting and not "getting"!

I have hunted in the rain for the past 20 years. I have never seen a deer while hunting in the rain. I just wind up ruining my equipment and getting cold.

I grew up in the Adirondacks and loved hunting in the rain and snow. Always found deer taking cover in the hemlocks or cedars. I moved out of the mountains and up to the border lands along the St. Lawrence river and our bow opener was in the middle of a week long rain storm. Saw deer everyday...in the cedars and bedded near ag fields. You fellas must be hunting in the wrong spots. Or it is just luck. Love hunting in bad weather....not a lot of other hunters out pressuring deer.

I have hunted in the rain before too. The deer are moving, when you bump them out of thier beds. It is quite a challange to stalk up on a bedded deer in the rain. I have never been able to get in bow range doing it. If you like to beat the brush and get soaked you may see some, running away with tails high. Rainy days are good for watching Primos hunting videos. smile.gif

I love hunting the rain! You just have to be prepared and know where to look for the deer!Where do they take cover?Thats where you need to be!Keep the wind right and work the area!Stalking is awesome in the rain, you can get away with more, the noise of the rain, softness of the ground, rain hinders sound!Wear your rain gear on the inside of your hunting clothes so you stay dry and the outer shell stops noise from the rain gear!Thats how we did it in the ol days, now they probably have rain gear that is made from soft fabric that doesn't make noise when branches rub on it?But the rain is the time to hunt, not sit in a stand!IMO wink.gif

I love hunting in the snow, rain or light drizzle as long as it's not a gully washer. Any scent that I have not taken care of with my clothing, sprays etc. is less likely to be detected, my movement to and from the stand are quiet and there are usually less hunters out there. I'ver shot many good bucks during this time.
If it's a downpour for an extended period of time then it's best to be out there right after it stops. If you know a front is coming in with heavy storms later that day, be out there before. In general the deer tend to feed heavy before and after a good storm.

When it's raining I like to stalk / still hunt. The deer are likely to be bedded up, so head to the bedding areas. You can move without making much noise in the wet woods and the rain covers up any noise you do make. You also don't have to worry about scent nearly as much. Everything is in the hunters favor. The deers eyes, ears, and noses don't work... so move slowly and keep your eyes open. You can also sneak right in on one or walk up on one that is moving inside of cover.
