Hello,

I am new to the Primos forums, and I actually just bought the Primos Dove and Quail call. And was wondering if anyone had any tips and tricks on how to use them? Or if there is and videos or anything that I can watch and learn from?

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thank you

i have never used a call to call quail or doves. use dogs for quail. sit between water and food for doves. no calls needed. quit worrying about calls that aren't needed. just hunt.

I have used quail calls before, and they work pretty good. I have used them to locate the coveys, and I have also seen them bring a covey to you!. We were scouting around before the quail opener once, heard some quail, and started to call back to them. They would answer our call... and like a hot turkey, the covey slowly moved to us.
The quail call can work when hunting... after the coveys get split up, you can sometimes locate single and double birds with the call. cool.gif

Dove are not very vocal, except during the breeding season. I have an old Olt dove call, but I haven't used it in more than 25 years. Dove respond better to decoys and it only takes about a half dozen of them to get a flight of doves to swing by your stand for a peek.

On the other hand, quail are very vocal. It doesn't matter what species of quail you're after, they all are communicating with each other.

Bobwhites have a come back call, and you can use it to locate broken coveys. The other quail species may have one type of distinctive call, but they all have a type of "cluck" that's more like "tut - tut - tut", whether it's a single "tut", or a very stacato "tut" in a series of 3, 4, and more. Listen for the replies.

Dan,

I know Quail calls should work and here is why. First of all I have never used one although I have hunted and shot at least a thousand Quail in my lifetime over Englich Setters and Pointers.
But while hunting deer at Collins Creek Ranch in Albany Texas while filming an Outdoor Channel Show with Dick Metcalf and my Guide Paul Ivy, I experience something I had never seen before. While driving down the trail a covey of quail ran across the trail in front of the truck at about 75 yards. Paul asked me if I had ever seen Quail called in before. I advised NO. We stopped the truck and Paul and I got out. He began to call using his mouth which sounded to me like little squeaks. The Quail that had already ran into the brush began to come out on the trail and run to us. What a sight that was.
So no doubt the right call would work. This was in October in Texas.

Quail will answer back when you whislt at them, that is how some people I know locate coveys to go get.

As for Doves it really is a waste of time. Their was a guy at our dove field openig day that had a hadel one and and tried to use it, and it didn't work I don't think he called in a dove all afternoon. But decoys are a diff story take a couple on a fishing pole and throw them over a power line and it is deadly.

"throw them over a power line and it is deadly."

Sounds deadly to me as well as incredibly stupid.

How so? been doing it for ever, never had a problem. Killed a million doves with that setup to. They will decoy like crazy to them sitting up their.
