well, im 18 and started crow hunting just 6 months ago, bought a johnny stewart 512 and have 3 decoys with an owl, and have some tapes, how do u get ur decoys so high in the air, what ammo do you use, what choke tube do u use, what call do you use, how many decoys do u use, i kno alot of questions but im still learning

I have been crow hunting all of march and it has been a blast! We have been using on average about 16 decoys and an owl! We haven't shot a ton but we are learning. We use whatever shells we have, nothing special something around the #5 or #6 shot size. As for the decoys in the air, I would like to know how to do that as well besides shimmying up the tree!

well from what i learned for crowbusters.com is, u get a heavy object such as a washer, and fishing line, throw the line over a branch hook the line to ur decoy, and pull it up, make sure u tie the line to a heavy object (branch, rock).

for me i just use my .410 with #6 shot usually. Around here all you need is a mouth call and you got birds on your way. One thing i have noticed is be aware all around you and be looking in the trees. Alot of times a small murder of crows will come in front of you, and you get skunked on the ones that snuck up and are sitting right behind you. I just like to stand with my back to a tree.

Crow hunting is a blast, and you can do it year round, at least you can in Texas. The first thing you need is camo, especially a face mask and gloves. As far as choke type, I would recommend a modified or improved. Most of the time, taking a crow is about like shooting a decoying duck, especially if you are using an electric caller and decoys. Most of the time I use the caller with no decoys, but if I do use the decoys, I just put the crow decoys on the ground and put the owl in the center. If you want to have a real blast, get your hands on a RoboCrow. Put that sucker about five feet off the ground, and you will be smacking crows trying to land on the Robo. Also, I always try to make sure and shoot the first crow that approaches. Also, if you are using a particular type call, such as crow/owl fight, if the crows stop coming in, quickly change to another type call, such as crow in distress. Almost every time, this will stir the crows up again, and they will start coming back in.

i call em in somtimes just with a preditor call

How do you guys set your decoys up? Do you prefer the ground or in a tree?

Crow hunting is fun man i think everyone should hunt them because the populations are too high and they eat too much

yep...been crow huntin for years ... i have calls , tapes , cd's , decoys ( i use to have a bunch of decoys but some sorry joker stole bout half of them out the back of my truck!!)... but i love it ... i think they come in to the callin best in late spring when turkey season is over.. and you better have some good camo on too !!! those things can see !!!!!!

I also seem to have better luck in the spring.I like setting up in semi-open woods,or find small openings in the woods. That way they come in all the way.If you get in too open of an area they will hang up way off. After they have been shot at a few times they wise up real quick!!

It's fun to hear him caw and come in like a kamikaze. You don't really have to lead them either.Just put it right in front of his beak and pull the trigger.Put it right on him if he's coming straight in.I like using high brass 7 1/2's and a modified choke, but I have been known to sky bust a few with high brass 6's,and a turkey choke.Low brass 6's and 7 1/2's work good in tight places with an imp. cylinder.
