I am a newby muzzleloader owner and have only shot a few rounds through mine. I have cleaning kit and I bought all the CVA cleaning products. I notice some rust at the end of my barrel and decided I to clean my MZL again. I applied the cleaner on the brush and scrub away. Ran several patches through to remove the cleaner.
Then I ran those pre soaked rust prevention pad through the barrell and around where I saw the rust. I noticed yesterday I still have the same rust stops.
Is this a bad sign?
I have a CVA Wolf Magnum

SOUNDS LIKE THE FINISH/BLUING MAY BE THIN OR GONE IF I READ THIS RIGHT THAT THE RUST IS ON THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR BARREL. NO MAJOR CONCERN FOR FUNCTIONALITY JUST ASTHETICS. IF YOUR GUN IS BLUED THEY SELL RE-BLUING KITS. EASY TO USE JUST FOLLOW DIRECTIONS

No big deal. Just apply a coat of gun oil every once in a while. I give my black powder guns a look see and a wipe down a bit more often than my other guns and have never had any major problems.

The rust is actually in the inside of the barrell right at the exit. There might be some rust further down as well upon further inspection.

ARE YOU RUNNING A PATCH OF BORE BUTTER DOWN BARRELWHEN YOU ARE DONE CLEANING? I HAVE NEVER HAD ONE RUST DOING THAT. YOU DO NEED TO RECLEAN PRIOR TO SHOOTING TO GET BORE BUTTER OUT.

Use Bore Butter inside the barrel and gun oil on the outside. Never use any petroleum-based products inside the barrel, it will cause you problems down the road.

I followed the cleaning instructions to the letter and after the cleaning I used the pre-soaked rust prevent patches throught the barrel about six times.
I have not used Bore Butter. Who makes it?

T/C makes the bore butter. Its great stuff. I use it on my muzzeloaders inside and out. It will season the bore over time (kinda like ya season cast iron skillet) and allow for easier loading/cleaning and outstanding corrosion resistance. Heck I even put this stuff on my hunting/butchering knifes during the off season. Its a food grade rated protectent/lubricant so its non-toxic. I am meticulous about keeping my guns clean, always-always clean a muzzleloader before putting it away for the season. If you got rust good chance it wasnt clean/dry enough before it was put it up. Ive also found the longer you use bore butter-the longer you can go without cleaning the gun after fireing. For instance during our gun season here in IL. If I shoot my first deer of the season on fri. I wont clean till Sun. By the way T/C also makes a good food grade bore cleaner thats kick-a$$.
