Kash,
Yes there is or at least it has worked for me with a couple of clients dogs. Have somebody throw bumpers for the dog and you stand back say 50 feet and start shooting (just once) with a .22 and come closer after every shot if the dog isn't bolting and then keep doing that until you're right there with the dog. And if at anytime the dog gets uncomfortable then move back. But, keep throwing bumpers for him/her and that should cure it.
Good luck.

Have your friend stand in the water and call the pup and make it a game. Have the puppy get his feet wet at first and work their way deeper. My 8 month old chocolate was afraid of the water and making it a game for her made it great. Now she is a water junkie. Tell you friend to remember to make it a game, make it fun for the pup.

With both of those questions you need to do it gradually, and make it enjoyable for the dog. One other suggestion for the gunshy dog is to start with a cheap capgun from the dollar store. Make sure he's good and hungry, then when you feed him fire cap gun while standing next to him. First behind your back, then out in front, then right over his head. Fire it three or four times while he eats so that he gets used to it. after he can handle that move it op to the .22 like mentioned earlier, then on to the shotgun. Take a month or so to progress from the capgun to the shotgun. I've done this with my pups since the day I got them from the breeder and have never had a dog that was gun shy.
As far as the water question, labs take naturally to water, but don't try to get them all the way in for the first time until a hot summer day. It also helps a lot to get in with the pup to give him encouragement. My first pup was six or seven months before he had his first swim because I got him in December. By June he was swimming in the river with me and ruining my flyfishing trips because he wouldn't get out of the holes that I was trying to fish. Above all be consistent and be patient. I can say that training a lab pup is easier than potty training a child. All of my dogs have been more obedient than either of my two little girls.

Lots and lots of encouragement!!! The water thing you can also use just a normal kids pool. And like was already said BE PATIENT!!! The only thing that will get accomplished by trying to rush things is the pup will be worse off. Good luck and have fun!!

I wouldn't take an already gun shy dog to the gun range and lock him up in a crate and just fire away. I would gradually work the problem out.
