Depends on the hunting situation. In open hardwoods, its really hard to beat a .22. If you're hunting really thick piney woods, you might try a shotgun. I've killed lots of squirrel's up high in pine trees with my 12 guage, didn't mess them up either. I love squirrel hunting, in fact me and my boys are planning a trip in the next couple weeks!

Ive been very pleased with a .22 but havent hunted them in the thick stuff that okbowman is talking about.

I use a shotgun early when the leaves are on thick and then my 22 late fall when the leaves are gone and I need a longer shot.
i would look at it like this, if i were going to pick one gun, i would look at the gun that would be best incase you want to hunt other animals like rabbits or qual or even deer. If you go with a 22 you limit what you can hunt. If you go with a shotgun you can use it in other area's.

Well where I hunt either a .22 or a 410 work great! The best gun I ever have used was my grandpas old single shot 410! Works amazing!

I like to hunt with a single barrel 20 gauge that I've had since I was a kid. It's light to carry and fun to shoot.
