Hey dudes.. I went turkey hunting yesterday and things got kinda hairy lol.. But it was fun none the less.. Things started out slow yesterday but eventually I homed in on a flock barking up a storm down in the creek bottom.. They sure get loud in the fall.. Anyway I tried calling in hopes of bringing them to me but could tell they werent gona cooperate.. so I slowly moved in tighter down in the creek bottom and tried stalking them stopping every so often to scan the woods.. before long I knew exactly where they were going, and they were headed to the top of this ridge along side the creek bottom, but at the same time they were running out of room because a road was in there way. Its kind of hard to explain and youd have to underrstand the land to know what Im saying.. But I knew theyd eventually circle back around towards my direction so I got up to the top of this ridge and got set up to wait em out all the while they kept on bellarin as loud as the could. Well as I sat and waited a few cows started moving closer to my position and the turkeys sounded like they were going back down to the bottom. So not wanting to shoot in close proxmity of the cows I got up and started to head the birds off in the bottom.. No sooner than I took ten steps and looked up there were some 15 turkeys about 70 yards down the slope giving me the wtf look and I knew I was screwed.. I quickly raised my shotty and shot once knowing full well I wouldnt hit one and Im sure it went over there heads, and yes the cows were behind me. Well the birds wanted none of that so I ran straight at em and they scattered.. I knew I done good cause birds were heading to the farthest reaches of the globe in all directions with several making a b line for the creek bottom. once they had all vacated the area I went and set half way down the hill over looking the creek bottom and quickly got set up in hopes of bringing one back in.. It was pretty crazy but my hastly new set up provided a perfect set up over looking the creek and surrounding area, plus I had good clear down hill shooting lanes through the timber.. It was a perfect kill zone.. Once settled I did some quick putts on my slate and not 5 minutes later here comes a bird putting along the top of the ridge looking for his pals.. But I couldnt get the shot becuase he was to my left rear and I am a left handed shooter.. So I sit still in hopes that hed come down in the creek bottom for saftey, but then he faded off.. I decided to stay for awhile though because I could here birds calling to regroup and had a good feeling theyd be back in my area soon.. Problem with that though is here come these stupid cows passing just 5 feet away from me heading down to the creek to water and they were all starting to chill right in my kill zone.. well after about 20 minutes I decided it wouldnt be good if the birds showed up and the cows were there so I opted to call it a morning and finish some school work.. So I pick up all my stuff and start back up the slope to the top of the ridge and look up and heres this big tom heading straight at me, but he seen me and got the hell outa dodge

.. I thought oh well.. didnt get nothing, but it was a lot of fun and made my way back to the car.. On the way I bumped 4 more birds but they were to quick to get a good shot.. I told my self on the way home I should let it die down for a day or so then set up in the bottom and see what happens.. Well I couldnt wait and went back this morning to the same tree over looking the creek bottom and sure enough there were birds roosted all around me in a semi circle.. As dark gave way to first light here come the **** cows again only they were going back up to the pasture.. They were crashing and splashing through the creek and I recon this irritated the turkeys case they started puttin and carying on again.. The stupid cows came right by me and a couple knew I was there and evem smelled my boots, but I stayed at the ready incase I had to but stroke one with my shotty.. I hated to yell or anything, so I stayed still while they passed just feet away from me and eventually they all made there way to the pasture opening up my perfect kill zone over looking the creek bottom.. about 20 minutes later the birds started calling alot and flying down here and there, but most were outa sight once they landed.. But I waited cause I knew I might get a chance at one, and eventually I did.. 3 birds that I didnt relize were there then flew down to with in 30 to 40 yards and imeadiatly started surveying the situation. I was in the cat bird seat then.. I was up hill from them and they were to my right with a nice clear shooting lane. I slowly positioned my gun just right as one scanned the forrest with its periscope head allowing for a great shot opertunity when I let him have it imeadiatly dropping him.. the woods really came alive then and I sat tight for a few minutes to see if I could get another shot on one but then things grew quiet and I got up as 2 birds ran away lmfao... When I refer to the turkey as "him" because im pretty sure it was a very young 6 month old jake.. He had a small stubby snood and was starting to get small carbuncles around his neck.. So I think he was a jake. I really would have rather had a hen, but when there that young its hard to tell unless you can really see there head good and they arent gona let you get that good of a look.. Normally I let jakes go, and who knows mabey it was a hen, but Im pretty sure hens dont have snoods and carbuncles do they? Oh well, it was a great weekend and even though the bird was a small one its a victory for me in the turkey woods..
