I just have to say something about rabbit hunting. Not many people do it. Also i noticed not many people talk about it. Rabbit hunting was the thing to do at one time, for me it still is. Nothing better than the sound of a dog running a rabbit. Your friends and family by your side and the dew on the ground with adrenline as the rabbit gets closer. Laugh and enjoyment when one breaks loose out through an open feild and everyone missed lol. Great i tell ya. Some day i hope to hunt birds for upland game but i am in collage and i have a hard time geting time to run my beagle. Bird dogs are even tougher from what i herd from my dad.

I love rabbit hunting. It's best when you have about 5 or so Beagles. You can hear their different barks. One might be long in the mouth, and another might have a chop bark, a little less desirable. We don't do any jump shooting, we like to let the dogs run. We went to .22 rifles years ago. My cousin uses an Anshutz with a scope, and gets them sittin. The rabbit population has fallen off recently, and we've been squirrel hunting more. I never squirrel hunted over a dog until a couple of years ago, and it's the best way to hunt squirrel, if you can get a decent dog. Bird doggin? It ain't hard. You don't really train a pointing dog, you're really working with their instincts. After all, with years and years of breeding, to refine instincts, it should come out. You just work on getting them to hold staunch, and retrieve if you can get them to retrieve. I have hunted everything with dogs and without, and it's better with dogs. If I were you I wouldn't hesitate on getting a bird dog. Find out what you like and go for it. I almost got into flushing dogs, and ended up with Setters. I am real glad I ended up with Setters. I have owned Labs and like them a lot. I just like hunting birds with pointinng dogs. Then when you go rabbit hunting it's different, as different as deer hunting. So, the more you do different kinds of hunting, the better it is. A lot of variety within one activity. Duck and Goose, well, that got to be too much work for me. I don't call well either.

I hunted rabbits more when I was a younger girl then I do now...I do like to upland hunt too...I raise English Pointers...I'm training a 7 month old female now...she is bird crazy.
Hope you are able someday to get out and enjoy a hunt of upland game...I love it when a cock pheasant gets up...and oh the sound of a covey of quail on raise...scare the tar right out of ya...

I enjoy rabbit hunting nothing beats a nice morning hunt w/ some beagles in a thicket.. hearing them dogs run them is so fun... our sportsmans club just put in a rabbit pen took the dachaunds out there to see what they can do just for kicks and the one ran into the hole and 6 come out and it went on chasing them... i guess that is what they were breed to do lol...

What Rabbits?
We used to have a ton of Wabbits when I was a youth. now days its hard to find them where I live.
You can't just hunt everywhere like you used to. all the land has been bought up by outfitters and there is no trespassing in most places
I now own my own land and hope to get them started back. The State of Illinois has a nice wildlife management program and they will come look your land over draw up a management plan to what you want to do, give free tree's and bushes and educate you on what and how to do it.
I started raising my own rabbits because the wild rabbit population has dropped.
I love eating wild rabbit. I would also have dogs if i had a place to run them.

I hadn't been rabbit hunting for a few years since i lost me Beagle. Just found the right pup for me and got her for Christmas. Not quite old enough to run her yet but already training her to scent them out.
We have a ton of rabbits around me so it will be fun next season.
