It's my first year ever hunting a bird. I was wondering how you guys clean doves. Do you just cut the bird down the midle of the chest and scoop the inerds out or is there more to it? I was planning on going out today but I figured against it without knowing how to properly prepare a dove for cooking.

the only way i have ever cleaned a dove is i put my thumb up under the rib cage and place the beck between my index and middle finger (imagine pitching a baseball) and dig my thumb in and remove the just the breast as there is no other meat worth the effort to skin and gut it otherwhise. and then just remove the bones. you may have to keep a wing for ID if you do it as soon as you collect them. otherwise do it after you leave.

fry em in garlic butter or add to sauce and serve with ziti smile.gif

i have always done it the way kilog says to do it

After you pop that breast and bone it wrap it around some cream cheese and some jalepena pepper then wrap it with bacon, season and grill. You wont be sorry.

I think I would be sorry. I'm not to big a fan of peppers, or cream cheese. Thanks anyway.

I always spread the breast sking apart using my thumbs then take a pair of game shears and snip the wings - then pull the breast out.

Shiskabob sticks on the grill wrapped in bacon then add the jalepeno and cheese after the dove is cooked throw on grill for a second to melt the cheese just a tad....

We always twist the wings off first, then like was described above...pull up on the breast from the bottom with your thumb and it just seperates from the rest of the bird. The skin, feathers and all, just peel away from the breast real easy after that.

Had a buddy who had a simple but tasty way of fixing dove. He just seasoned the breasts with pepper, then put them in a baking dish and submerged them in water with a packet of powdered onion soup mix. Baked them on medium heat til they were tender and boy were they delicious. wink.gif

I go hunting, shoot some doves. Bring them home, then just breast them out, pluck the front feathers, peel the breast skin, and cut out the two breasts.

Wrap them in bacon and cook them. Don't know the exact recipe, my mom cooks them. Man their good. Or use a breading on them.
