Full Version: What do I do with my new Freak

I just got The Freak with Frictionite yesterday. What should I do to it to prepare it for use? Do I have to sand it a lot to make it ready? :?: Do I need to do anything to the striker (Gravedigger) to get it ready? The packaging it came with doesn't say much if anything on prepping it for use.

I have tried to sand it down a bit with the sandpaper that came with it but can't seem to make it sing. (Obviously I am new to turkey hunting.)

Any pointers would be great. Thanks

yeah sanding it a lot is a must. That's very important. I don't know too much about the Freak with Frictionite... I have the one with Crystal I'm sure the one you got is a great call.... if the frictionite is like the one in crystal it's probably pretty dang loud... those Gobblers wont know if their coming or going...

Browntailguy,
Hi. You should definitely sand it down good. Try to go in a cricle when you sand, don't just go back and forth. You might want to buy a slick stick. It helps alot better then what the sand paper does.

These two are right about prepping the surface of your call. And like T.B. said the Slick Stick would be a good thing for you to have. It's much easier and faster to prepare and maintain your calls, and there is a little hole in the end with a green cleaning pad for your strikers. The ends of you strikers, especially wood strikers, need to be cleaned off periodically. The wood strikers will get black on the end and not sound right with your call.

Also, are you holding your striker at the correct angle to the surface of your call? If you are holding it too upright it won't work well. Just a thought. I have the Old Glory, which is the same as your call only it doesn't strap on your leg. I love that call, it sounds great. My favorite is the Power Crystal, same as the Freak with Crystal, again just not a strap on.

One other thing to remember in case you ever buy a crystal call. DO NOT sand in a circle with that surface, you want to sand in one direction only. But with Frictionite you can sand it either way and it sounds fine.

Don't do anything to your strikers but clean them with a scotch brite pad.
Like has already been said the Slick Stick is the real deal for a call conditioner. The frictionite surface usually doesn't require much sanding like the crystal surface does. The best thing I have found is to let a little kid play with it and sand it .

hey.
only sand it a little, then blow the particles off and wipe it down. my sounds perfect after this procedure.
