Can anyone suggest some destinations for a public land mulie? I would prefer a rifle hunt and I can not go before the third week in november? I don't have the cash to hunt a five thousand dollar private ranch. Has anyone hunted the blackhill region of south dakota? The season runs the entire month of november and the out of state tag is only $155. Any help is appreciated. THis will be my first trip to the west.

lots of deer alot of areas for travel by four wheeler, a little overcrowded but that usually gets the deer moving. It is wide open mountains with only sage brush so glassing is required.

AzBuckSnort,
Ive definately considered Montana but the tag is now $850 for out of state deer. (Expensive for a public school teacher in NC). Thanks for the suggestion though.

mules can easily be seen in th Owyhee mtns of Idaho. Getting within rifle range is another issue. Plan on 800yd shots.

Better luck,

Unless I'm understanding it wrong...It's a law against overdraws. In the 80's and early 90's (before lighter carbons were popular) if a hunter wanted a really fast setup he had to cut the arrows 1-3 shorter than the draw length and shoot an overdraw.

i.e. 26 arrow on a 29 draw length with an overdraw.

This lighter arrow is faster yet (and many will argue this heatedly) doesn't penetrate as well as the slower heavier arrow. (If you run the calculations for momentum and not KE) and many didn't (and some STILL don't) understand why they were wounding animals at 40-50-60 yards. The lighter arrows just don't pack the punsh as heavier arrow downrange.

So it looks like Colorado made the decision for them laugh.gif 0 7269 0 0 0 0 52198 0 1494 Trushot_archer 0 1 24.11.180.91 1087125154 0 Bigegst difference btw 3 and 4 blade will be in penetration. 3 Blade will have a higher propensity to pass through with less cutting diameter but the 4 blade will leave a bigger wound channel

Same resoning why the traditional and lower poundage setups work very well with a razor sharp 2 blade.

Both will do the trick very well from your Setup...plenty of power in the Outback.

Incidentally I just got another 3 dozen Turbo Nocks myself. Nick Snook has a new one out that's a nylon polymer and much less suceptible to having the wings broken off. I love mine. 0 6881 0 0 0 0 52199 0 -1 Anonymous 0 1 208.246.86.5 1087125399 0 Great picks bean. 0 7265 0 0 0 0 52200 0 -1 Anonymous 0 1 208.246.86.5 1087125707 0 HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

A tag. Is an archery tag. When you buy an A tag you must specify a unit number. You may hunt any unit that is in that same zone as you specify. The tag is good for any elk. And when I hunted Idaho you could hunt any unit in the LOLO zone with an A tag. Come general rifle season you can still hunt on your A tag with a rifle but are limited to a spike.

B tags are rifle tags. Most people put in to try and draw a LE tag if they don't draw then they get a general tag wich allows them to take a spike.

Hope this helps. 0 7284 0 0 0 0 52237 0 1214 BrokenHorn 0 1 24.10.153.224 1087147027 0 Mushrooms.
Mushroom eating elk are the best to hunt. They seem to be disoriented, stand still staring off into space for long periods of time, this is a great time to put on a stalk. laugh.gif 0 7199 0 0 0 0 52238 0 960 widucks07 1 1 64.12.116.204 1087147548 0 Im 15 and have killed a few deer with my rifle, and know im going to take up bowhunting. Hi. I am also 15 but have killed a couple deer with a bow. I would first talk to your local shop and have them help you get started...I'm sure they will help you out. 0 7286 0 0 0 0 52242 0 1424 mleadford 0 1 12.73.173.210 1087148498 0 OBH- I am going to have to agree with Arky here. In nearly all the public land I hunt in Colorado if the elk smell you they leave- not very far but they don't stay in that area. No doubt if a young cow or bull gets a whiff by theirselves they may not leave, but if the herd bull or one of lead cows do they are gone.

I hunt two general areas for elk (200 miles apart) and the area with more hunting pressure and roads is area that elk don't leave the country when they get spooked or wind somebody. Sure they can be pushed out, but I honestly think that they smell so many people that going over the next ridge is going to be no different and these animals are extremely non-vocal and nocternal.

On the other hand the elk in the area with NO roads and fewer hunters don't stick around when they get a good whiff (they might go miles). Regardless, in either of the places- however far they spook- if a mature bulls gets a good strong smell of you- he has become ten times harder to hunt for that entire season. 0 7237 0 0 0 0 52243 0 956 Rod 0 1 209.240.207.42 1087148512 0 I also have the anonymous call block on my phone line. Don't worry about the most expensive bow you can buy! There are plenty of good bows for a reasonable price. Don't get hung up on alot of power. That is somthing you work into over time. Start at 55 or 60lbs. With the new let off reductions being so generous you will be able to hold the draw and concentrat on doing things the right way! Get your form and draw in good shape befor you try to advance to lots of power and long range shots. Practice at 15yds to start and move to 20 for hunting. Practice and practice and practice. You can get some bag targets that you can hang from a post. You might want a back drop to catch the stray arrows for awhile until you can get a good pattern going. I have been shooting a bow for about 40 yrs and still learn somthing every year. There are some very good used bows out there that were traded in just because someone wanted somthing that looks better. Looks dont kill deer! Practice and paitience get the big boys. You can join a archery league in the off seasons to keep practicing and talk to and watch others and get alot of tips. smile.gif I will try to help with any questions you have as will anybody else on this forum. Wisconsin Bowhunters organization is one of the finest in the country and can give you plenty of contact for archery shoots and archery shops and outdoor ranges with hunting target that will prepare you for all kinds of shots. Welcome to the world of bowhunting. Go to as many archery shops as you can and look at the many different kinds of bows out there..No 1 archery shop carries all the bows there is out there so go to as many as you can before buying...I don't know just how strong you are but NEVER over poundage yourself with a bow...it is better to start on a lower poundage and work your way up to a higher poundage...to many people end up hurting themselves trying to pull too high of a poundage bow..start around 40 or 50 and work your way up to where ever you can...a 40 pound bow will kill a deer just as well as a 60 or 70 pound bow will..it is the arrow placement that you need to get right. Check out both the Compound and the Traditional bows (longbows and recurves). Let us know what you bought and keep us up on your progess. biggrin.gif 0 7286 0 0 0 0 52267 0 1857 huntingislife 1 1 24.119.29.25 1087157404 0 Man isshe you are right because i am at 50 right now and i can pull that back easy but when i move up to 60 i caint do it with out a big strain and so im stayin at 50 because i can hunt with that and be successful so im leavin it there! 8) 0 7286 0 0 0 0 52268 0 1857 huntingislife 1 1 24.119.29.25 1087157601 0 so my dad sais anyway!!! biggrin.gif im ganna git after it this year tho 0 6881 0 0 0 0 52269 0 981 patrick 1 1 66.189.226.84 1087164909 0 i got a stealth cam 2. Oh Man !! ..

If an Elk is spooked by smelling or seeing you, then from my knowledge, they will run , but wont leave their home !,they usually take off and go bed or hide in some reprod ,and come right back out where you spooked them feeding within that location...i'm not talkin in 5 minnutes, later that evening. And if your not seeing them , they are some where in the same location, they did'nt run 20 miles from you !..I've had it happen to many times.

sure glad i don't hunt these Elk you speak of in Colorado , ..callin in an old rag horn 6 point looks easy from all i have seen.

Each with its own season and type of weapon. The A tag has no quota or limit on how many tags are sold and is generally considered the Archery tag. The B tag has quota or a limit on how many tags are sold. UsuallyI believe its around 2000 give or take. Idaho limits out of state tags in quota units to 10% of what the total quota is. Therefore roughly only 200 B tags for out of state hunters are available in unit 12. There over the counter first come first serve no drawing but some of these units will sell out.

However, I stared buying Fields Edge becuase I like the coloration and the blotchy pattern.

In reality.....we had an argument at the camp some years ago during bow season as to which was the best.....

I went out that evening in a pair of faded Wranglers and a white T-shirt, climbed up about 28 foot in my climber...and arrowed a deer.

Personnaly I think there is just too much hype as to patterns.

A friend of mine has a BLAZE ORANGE insulated suit with leave patches sewn here and there....gun hunting...he kills his 6 deer a year!

He owns a 25000 acre ranch in South Dakota and had invited me to come up the first week in November to hunt P&Y bucks during the rut.

We finalized everything and I am getting excited!

They only shoot 150 or better on the ranch (except for guest, they can take whatever they feel like shooting)

Most of their hunting is spot and stalk or setting up in funnel areas.

He said that yesterday when he got back from fishing for walleye, sauger, and flatheads, he rode the ranch some on his 4 wheeler and got up some really nice bucks in velvet.

Our plan is to bowhunt in the mornings and evenings...and pheasant hunt during the day. Bringing my shotgun...but shooting a pheasant with my bow would be the ultimate......however...I could not afford that many arrows! laugh.gif

Now I am starting to get excited about this upcoming season!

I didn't mention how elk come to calls just that the buggles from the differernt types of elk are different. I also didn't say they are greatly different just that they are different. I watched Will Primos hunt a Tule elk in Cali. and if you will listen carefully there is a slight difference in the buggle compared to the many Rocky Mountain elk taken on the same video. Now I may not have the experience in hunting elk or the opportunities you do, but I have been around long enough to know that many animals due to slight differences in body types, even elk, have slightly different sounds. Just for giggles I'll bet you and I sound slightly different even though we are both men.

I believe that if a mature animal is burned once he could possible remember the experience and try something different the next time. Coyotes seem to have this trait. They become extremely wary after being called in and burned even after only one time. 0 7300 0 0 0 0 52331 0 658 trcass 0 1 4.228.204.207 1087187507 0 Anyone shooting at a deer at 800 yards better have military sharpshooter behind his name and have a weatherman posted about halfway to the buck, reporting back the conditions. My opinion anyway. One of the biggest, if not the biggest, muley bucks I've ever seen was in SE Idaho, at 1/10 that range. Unfortunately it was a 2-point or smaller area/season. 0 3806 0 0 0 0 52332 0 658 trcass 0 1 4.228.204.207 1087188052 0 You guys make me want to chase jet goats with my bow! I grew up in Eastern Montana hunting them with rifle. One I got was with the exact method mentioned by David Holder. The buck was walking down a fence, unaware of my presence, at about 80 yards, a nice easy rifle shot. I kind of stumbled on that area at about the same time they got there-in other words, I got lucky! But I learned the fence trick and have used it since then. I just might have to buy a general archery tag here in ID this year and try for one with my bow.

I might add that a call my brother and I discovered one year worked pretty well. You just say the sound of the letter P in sort of a drawn out wheeze. That brought a doe trotting right over to check things out-right into my crosshairs. I don't know if this would bring them within bow range, but it might be worth a try. 0 6857 0 0 0 0 52333 0 844 butterbean7008 0 1 216.9.209.167 1087190856 0 I remember the one year Primos went with Advantage and Will was on early bow hunt, he looked more broke out then up. For the most part all of todays bows are high quality and all will take game. For those new to the sport I'd strongly suggest keeping it simple though. The less bells and whistles on your bow, the better, at least to start with. Learn good shooting form by either joining a local archery club or having the local pro shop staff help you. Good fundamantals are essential. Otherwise, you'll spend your bowhunting life shopping for gadgets to improve what is simply poor shooting form. Andrew and I watched the game last night. Good pitching duel until the 9th. I felt bad for Jackson. He pitched well even in the ninth but LSU had some seeing eye hits. Even the home run was a golf ball shot. The south always produces some good ball players. Stumpy,

With due respect, it is not your only option. I've hunted SW [I mistakenly said SE in my previous post] Idaho and grew up in Eastern Montana hunting the same type of land. A guy can get lots closer to a deer in that country than 800 yards (which approaches a half-mile), as well as antelope, whitetails, or whatever else is out there. Before I left home (MT) I had taken probably 10 muleys in that country, all at very reasonable distances-I'd say well inside 300 yards. I don't have a second of military experience myself, I was just saying a guy has to be darn good to even be considering a shot at that distance. I seriously doubt most hunters have even shot at a target at 800 yards. I haven't. If not, there is no business shooting at a deer that far. I bet even with the .264 you would need a couple sheets of plywood stacked end on end to calculate the bullet drop at 800 yards, or at least one sheet. A guy would need a highly tuned rifle, top-end optics, tightly controlled loads, with knowledge of how to use it all, and most of all lots of practice and experience, military or otherwise, to even think of himself as proficient enough at that range to pull the trigger on a deer. I didn't say it can't be done. If you are good enough to drop a deer cleanly at 800 yards, my hat is off to you. But I bet in most of those situations you could get closer if you wanted to, and I myself would think twice about recommending 800 yard shots to other hunters.
