Turkey Bird
I live here in Northwestern New Mexico. tomorrow is opening day. I had a few birds located last weekend, in an area that the snow had recently melted. And yesterday 10"-12" of snow fell in the area I want to hunt. My question is, will spring snow push the turkeys to a lower elevation or will they wait out the snow till it melts?

Thanks for your help!

I can't give you a straight answer for sure. If they is pines where you roosted them I'd be willing to bet they are still there. The snow will be not as deep. Up here lately the rain and snow we've been getting hasn't done anything to turkey behavior. They are still strutting anc gobbling. To bad you couldn't have got up there tonight to locate them. I'd be prepared to do a little tracking tomorrow in the snow. Good luck and shoot them in the face.

Gobble_adict,

Thanks for your post. The area is in the pondarosa pine (about 8500' - 9000'). I did notice that the turkeys have been in flatter areas and not in the canyons . I guess its because the canyon still had snow and were considerably colder. I'm going to get to the area I'm planning to hunt an hour before light and walk some old logging and drilling roads. Calling about 300 yards and looking to cut some tracks. I'll let you know tomorrow how it goes.

The snow out here in KS didn't change their habits all that much, however, we only got 2-4" not 10-12".

It sounds to me like you are on the right track by getting in early and checking out any possible travel routes. That is how I got on the birds in the snow that we had. It was new enough that the tracks I saw were made within the last 2 hours of me being there so I figured that the birds were still in the area (creek bottoms where my power crystal can really carry). I let out a few cutts and next thing I knew I had turkeys coming in from 3 directions.

Stick to your gut.

We had 3 inches last wensday and another 4 on thursday. The birds gobbled from the roost but we never heard or saw them after that. The wind was gusting to 30mph so they stayed in the thick pines. Temps got to 60 Friday and saturday and there was 45 birds in the fields we hunt. They came out to feed like they were starved. wink.gif

No luck guys,

I walked (3.25 miles) thru snow all morning with no turkey tracks. Not even deer or elk the only tracks I came a cross were coyote. The wind picked up this afternoon so I won't make for the afternoon hunt. I did talk to a friend that was hunting in a different mountain range, that said he heard and saw gobblers but was'nt able to get a shot off. The mountain range he was on did not have as much snow, mostly rain. The forcast for tonight is more snow with rain tomorrow.
