Hey Guys!!!
Looks like we got ourselves a great team!!! Im gonna be doin alot of ground hog huntin here within the next few weeks! Hopefully i'll get our team a good start with some whistle pigs!! I usually do a good job of knockin um down with the .222
To introduce myself for those of you that dont know me, my name is Ted, i am a die hard hunter and gettin into trapping really good and plan on havin alot set this fall/winter!
I like hunting small game too!! Hunt squirrels, rabbits, and coon!!! Ill get us some good amount of points with coon this fall/winter! I had a Redbone coonhound named Misty, unfortunitly she past away last December on the 21st. I am getting two new redbone pups that will be around 9 weeks old when i get them here next month, already got names picked out for them, Sadie and Belle. They are both Females.. My dad and myself if all goes well, will have them ready by season to be treein some coon! I also have a Bluetick Beagle that is my rabbit dog... He loves to run rabbits!! So hopefully i can get us some points this fall/winter with a few rabbits! Trapping i should be able to catch some muskrats, a few mink, coon, and probably a few skunks, and a few possum.
Ill be able to shoot some pidgeons over on the farm too!!
This summer ill be crow hunting as well!!
Hopefully ill be able to contribute to the team!

I am going crow hunting this weekend. Season ends the 6th of april. I also plan on shooting a few pidgeons. I heard a bunch of coyotes howling tonight. I will be after them this fall. But if one walks past i will let the air out of him while turk hunting. The only animals i will be able to kill this summer will be ground hogs, prarie dogs, coyotes, i think coon, armidillos, possums skunk and pidgeons. I hope this will be a high scoring contest, makes it funner

I went out last night for ground hogs, seen 1, didnt take the shot cause he was running up a creek bank back to his hole, and i couldnt get my scope on him fast enough... If i woulda had the shotgun, probably woulda got him...
I can make us a team banner if i find the time to... Ill see what i can do...

Well the weather changed from cloudy to partly cloudy with sun and wind... I looked through the spotting scope out of my window and see 2 ground hogs chasing each other around the hay field in the bottoms, so i figured id go sit for awhile on the ridge... Well i sat and waited on them to come back out and finally one popped up out of the ridge of the hay field... So i pulled the gun up, and with the scope i have on this gun (my .222) this ground hog looked like a little tiny shrub brush, the only way i could tell it was him in my scope because it was a black dot, compared to a greenish colored looking dot... This scope is old, and its scrathed up lenses make it hard to see past 200 yards... This ground hog was out of my guns range, but not to far out to where i wouldnt try the shot... I waited on the thing to pop up, and once it did i took the shot... I shot then listened and heard the bullet slam into something with a sharp and loud "thump" so i looked through the scope to see that it wasnt there, so i went to see how much my bullet had dropped at that distance, and if i woulda aimed probably another half an inch higher i woulda whacked him, the entry hole in the ground was about 10 yards from where he was...Shot was probably close to 500 yards.

Man, to bad you couldn't have got him. that would have been five points. Saw a squirrel outside our house about 15 minutes ago. To bad its not season. I think if i can find a tape player i am going to go crow hunting. post back later.

Found the player. Didnt find batteries.

I hope to pick some up tonight. Season ends until fall next mon. the 9th. I think i might go up looking for pidgeons though. I got a alfalfa field with mounds in it. Could this be Ground hogs? If so how could i tell? I check back in a little bit. Gotta round up my shotgun and some shells.
Update: My dad said the pidgeon havent move back yet. They go south a few miles during the winter. They should be getting back here pretty soon.
StruttinBuck
Apr 1 2007, 04:54 PM
If the mounds are ground hog, they should have a hole for the entry and or exit of them... Holes can be small, or they can be big as well... It may be Prarie Dog as well, although i am not sure, because i have never seen nor shot at a prarie dog.
Good Luck!!

I know its not praire dogs but i suspect ground hogs. What time of day are they out? How do you hunt them?
StruttinBuck
Apr 1 2007, 05:13 PM
They are out around here in and out of there holes all day on a nice day... A good time to catch them out is after a good rain, and when it clears out then they come out and feed. I hunt them by just setting up and waiting on them to come out of their holes, and then ya whack um with whatever firearm you have... A 22 caliber gun will do the trick.. Ive used a 22 LR , 22 Hornet, 222, and a 22-250.

Apr 1 2007, 05:14 PM
Do you where camo? Would it be to late to go out right now and watch? I have a 22-250.
StruttinBuck
Apr 1 2007, 05:21 PM
Id would recommend wearing some sort of colors that match your surrounding ground that your going to be laying down on... I usually wear my camo shirt and a pair of blue jeans. Either that or ill wear a flannel that has some shades of green and brown in it and some blue jeans. Now is a good time to be out and no its not to late, they are usually out feeding before they go back to their holes bout now... "Prime Time" As dad and uncle say for um is right now until about dark.
If you go good luck!! Its alot of fun!! Patience is the key... Just stay in a spot thats close, but not to close to the holes... I usually tend to stay about 50-100 yards away from their holes... Another thing is, they have good keen eyesight.. You can find them and their holes on flat open terrain and on ridges and such, they like to be able to see what surrounds them...
Hope this helps!!!

Went out to the field and the farmer next to us was working in the next field. I couldnt shoot at where i thought the might be so i left. On the way back i shot a t a crow and missed

five points down the drain. Dont worry though i will get him and his little buddies
StruttinBuck
Apr 1 2007, 07:15 PM
Its cool... Everyone misses... I didnt go back out it was to windy... But now its starting to calm down, but ill probably wait and go out tomorrow if the weather permits...
When you do you a ground hog and take aim on him... Aim for his head... They will die instantly... Thats where i always aim.

I went out today with my 12 gauge, i couldnt find any critters that were on the list.
I live in city limits, and if i could shoot a shotgun in town then i would have already earned our team about 50 points. But i can get out in the country when i please, so yall dont got to worry about me not earning any points for our team. Also, I plan on buying a high powered BB gun, so i can get rid of them crows. Lets just hope i dont bust out any windows
Nebowhunter
Apr 1 2007, 08:38 PM
If your worried about shooting windows how are you going to hit crows?

lol That would work great if you could get one. I probably will contribute few points during the summer but come next fall when squirrel, rabbit, and ccon season kicks in the points will be flying.
StruttinBuck
Apr 1 2007, 09:37 PM
Yea...When coon season kicks in this fall... Ill definitly be gettin us some points...I might try and get over to the barn and shoot some pidgeon tomorrow, depends on what all is goin on round here... Might end up goin to town and lookin for a job. But ill defintily make it out for something tomorrow!!!Either ground hogs, or Pidgeon.

My buddy and I went out last night... Had one come out of its hole bout 5 mins after we set up... We timed our shot up on a 1.2.3 method... On 1 i shot and then not a moment later he shot.. Both shot right over top of him... Next time i think i am gonna aim for his neck and it should drop it right in his skull. He was roughly 100 yards away. I would go back out today, but temps took a nosedive and its spittin snow.
