I'm really stoked about this contest and I'm looking forward to being a part of this team. I am 25 from St.Marys, WV. I've got some pretty good turkey woods around me and I am 3 for 3 on the past few seasons. It should be a great season ahead us no matter if we get birds or not. I don't know how you all want to choose names so I'll just toss one out.
Team Crooked Spur.

I will be in South Texas after my Rio on March 31st and April 1st. Then spend rest of month trying for my first Eastern.
And I am good with the name y'all pick. Maybe combine a few names to make ours. Like the crooked spur limbhangers or the drummin gobblers. Just a thought.

Hey guys....my name is Travis, I'm 30 years old and I live in Central Illinois. This will be my first attempt at turkey hunting....so I will apologize in advance if I drag the team down!
I'm going to try my best though. We don't have a great number of turkey in Christian County where I hunt, so my season is only from April 20th to April 25th. Those are the only days I have to hunt.
I'm fine with any team name.

Thanks guys. I've been trying a mouth call for a while, but I just can't get the hang of it.
I had a guy tell me recently that a mouth call is the worst thing for a beginner to try and learn. He said I should probably go with a box call instead. Do you guys agree with that?
Also, I bought a hoot tube to try and locate the birds, but when I use it..it sounds like someone is beating up a duck!! Not to sure what that is all about, the problem is, I've never heard it done the right way.
I do have a crow call, would that be good for a locator?
farmboy
Mar 13 2007, 01:41 PM
I personally dont like crow calls, but yes they do work. As far as learning a mouth call, it may help if you get a dvd or cd that tells you how to do it. A lot of these also show the most effective way of using other calls. Its hard to explain how to blow a mouth call in words. I personally like a slate call over a box, both are easy to learn and both are very effective.
justin_wv
Mar 13 2007, 06:38 PM
Mouth calls are pretty tough, they were especially tough for me. Some people can pick it up faster than others. A box call is a good call but they do require some movement and I don't want my hands on anything other than my gun when a turkey is almost within range. I mainly use my box call for locating turkeys because they are very loud. Many folks use the same volume when they work a turkey but you have to remember that turkeys can hear much better than we can. So as the turkey gets closer, you might want to call a bit easier. A great combination to help you might be calling with the box call to get the birds heading your way. Once you feel that they are committed, put down the box call and start purring and clucking softly. Purrs and clucks are fairly easy to master and they may be the first calls that you can do well. When your using your owl call you might not be cupping your hands over the call enough. It may sound funny but the call may need to be muffled. Another great alternative is the flute style owl call. It doesn't have the raspy sound but it has a much higher pitch. Some folks prefer that style over the other. I like crow calls but it seems like everyone in the woods is blowin one. I feel that turkeys could become accoustomed to hunters useing crow calls. Try a goose call or even a hawk. These are things that gobblers maybe don't hear all the time and they will shock gobble to those more readily. I hope some of this helps. I am by no means a expert but I have spent some time chasing after those dang things and I've tried alot of stuff, some of it works but most of it doesn't.

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. I will continue to practice and then see how it goes.
While bow hunting this fall, I would hear turkeys every morning along the river which was about 120 yards away from me.
On several occasions I would see around 30 turkeys in the cut cornfield that when they were done eating around 9 o'clock would start heading back towards the river again.
So, I'm assuming they are roosting in these huge oaks along the river.
So if I find out where they are roosting, or at least feel like I've got a good idea of where they are roosting....how far away from their roost should I set up?

I just finished watching the "Mastering the Art" Turkey hunting dvd from , who else, Primos. It has plenty of good info in it on all the various calls as well as hunting tips and techniques. I have a bad gag reflex and never thought I would be able to use a diaphram call. Then my operation put me even deeper in doubt. But now I can sound moderately like a turkey, sometimes. How do you get to Carnegy Hall? A cab, duh. How do you get good with turkey and locator calls? Practice, practice, practice.

I have heard, and seen, different opinions on the roosting situation. Personally, I wouldn't hunt to near the roost. That way it is never disturbed. Try to find out which way they generally go after flying down. Do they have a set pattern? Depending on the terrain, maybe they feed in the same general areas most everyday. Scout it. Sit and watch and listen. By the way, doing this also helps when learning to call.

I got to wait till mid April. We finally got a good stretch of weather heading our way so I should be able to hear some good gobbling this week! There also might be a thunderstorm coming up so I should get into some prime scouting time. Might even get out my 1300 Win and shoot some patterns. Does anyone visit state parks to practice on turkeys? I've thought about giving it a try this year.

Well guys, I hope I didn't let y'all down. I got my Rio on opening morning. And I felt bad about what I did. This tom would NOT come out of strut as he followed hens across my path. It was down to the final seconds of a shoot or no shoot, so I shot. About half the beard is missing now.

But what an absolute blast.
Though it looks 9 inches in pic. the longest part of beard was actually only
8 3/4" The
right spur was 1 1/8"
The
left spur was 1"
The
fan was nice but much smaller than one I got last year.
I now know I measured the spurs on the short side, but nothing I can do about it now. At any rate, The rest of the hunt I could not get a gobbler to come in close enough. They were henned up and happy.
I did manage to get some Primos time in my pics though.

And next hunt is going to include B-Mobile as I am sure if he had been along, I could have gotten the big one I was after.
Just noticed the tape measure isn't showing at the base. I'm really sorry guys if this disqualifies me.
Maybe I can still bag my Eastern and replace this one.
Did I mention hail storms came through on Friday night? But Saturday opening came with blue bird skies !!

Stellfox, I feel your pain. The gobblers are henned up here as well. They are very vocal on the roost but once they are on the ground they're tight lipped. Maybe this week will be better. I am hearing alot of birds but they sound like they are 10 miles away.

Well....I gave it a try! My season has come and went!
Like I said earlier...I've never turkey hunted before, so this was all new to me. But I will definately be trying it again!!!
The first day out, I watched a big Tom and two hens fly down from the roost, and I was able to get that Tom to gobble back at my terrible calling probably 40 times, but he would get no closer than 50 yards and he would not leave his hens as they walked the other way.
So even though I didn't get a bird, I had a great time and will try it again!
