which vanes should i get for my broadheads to fly good? should i get the bohning blazer vanes or the nap quickspin vanes
JASON#1
I heard the quickspins are nice just as long as your not target shooting. I may try them next season
schunter
i would be using them for hunting
bowbender
well, if you shoot a whisker bicsuit, i have heard that WB doesnt work too well with quickspins, but i have heard that with blazers a WB works well....

Blazers. They arent as noisy and catch less wind. They are also stiffer so that adds to better flight. The one big reason I shoot them is because they are so durable.

What is everyones thoughts on the Turbo Nock Hunter by Bohning Archery? I had a buddy give me a few to try yesterday and have not had a chance yet. These replace your nock and your vanes and are made of plastic. He gave me these since I had mentioned to him that I have considering changing back to the blazer vanes from feathers.

GET THE BLAZERS!!!! I have tried both and the quickspins are terrible. They were all over the place with my broadheads. I switched to blazers and my broadheads shoot just like my fieldpoints now.

tonyf,

The turbo nocks are suposed to be nice but on a passthrough you will most likely lose them. If you do use them try adding a sheet of wrap on the back so you can find your arrow. This will cause your foc to go way out of wack though because the turbos are already really heavy also it wil really stiffen the spine on your arrows.

I don't see the point in spending $300 on a knife, and decorative knives are even more pointless, especially if you're not gonna use them. On the other hand, I fully understand man's obsession with the simplicity and usefulness of a good, sharp blade. It's one of the most useful tools a man can have!

IMO, Kershaw and Gerber are some of the best blades on the market - at least that are realistically priced. You get what you pay for, but these two don't make many blades that cost more than $100. For a good, all-around folding knife my choice is the Gerber Gator. The rubberized grip is easy to hold, even when covered in blood, and mine has the 1/2 straight-1/2 serrated blade, but they also come without the serration. Another good blade that's a little more expensive is the KA-BAR line. For the most part they're more for tactical carry use, but they make great hunting knives since they're non-reflective and sturdy. I mean, since the 40s or 50s Marines have been using them to dig hasty fighting positions - can't do that with soft steel! My next one will be the fixed-blade Warthog. It's only about a 5 blade, but it's very wide, so it should be a great skinning/chopping/carry knife, and it comes with a kydex sheath. 0 30871 0 0 0 0 260495 0 6771 Elkcrazed 1 1 170.232.128.10 1160403187 0 I'm from Iowa too. You know when they put it down and the jerk it up real fast a few times. He was looking right at me and was dancing around and all sorta crazy stuff and he was still a 100 yards off. Zak (15 yr old newbie) and I hit the woods early Saturday morning and were well situated before daylight.

Zak was anxious to take his first deer and I was excited for him.

As the sun slowly crept into the sky, the squirrels and chipmunks began their morning activities in earnest. Zak said, maybe we should go squirrel hunting! To which I said, another day, but not today.

Zak has ADD so it doesn't take long for him to become bored. By 6:45am he was already bored.

The sun had come up and there were no deer to be seen. Thus, he was bored and ready to shoot squirrels instead. wink.gif

He had asked me if he could stand up and stretch before it was even bright enough to see sights on the gun. But I made him wait until we could fully see that there weren't any deer standing nearby.

So, a little before 7am, I told him he could slowly stand up.

He no sooner got up and he was waving his hand at me frantically behind his back. Since he was on my left and was looking left, I couldn't see a thing with his body in the way, as well as the camo material of the stand itself. So I too slowly stood up.

Sure enough...there was a nice doe about 40 yards away. But she was steadily moving into a downwind position and with a fairly decent wind blowing, she was quickly alerted.

She stopped and looked our way nervously as the wind gusted up. Zak had been slowly raising the gun but I told him to freeze! She turned and looked the other way and I said slowly raise it some more. Which he did. But she snapped her head back around within seconds with the next gust of wind and he had to freeze again.

I heard something else coming and saw a small doe coming up to join the large doe. But it stopped about 30 yards from her when it noticed she wasn't moving.

Great...two sets of eyes now.

I cautioned Zak about the small doe and told him to focus on the big one and I'd keep an eye on the small one.

The big doe put her head down to nibble. I whispered, slowly move the gun up some more. He was getting closer now...

I glanced at the small doe. She wasn't downwind yet and she wasn't looking our way. She was just standing there looking the other way. Which was a good thing! biggrin.gif

Another gust of wind and the big doe got more nervous.

She turned to quarter away from us and I whispered NOW ZAK! Shoulder it!

She was starting to head out and I expected her to speed up at any moment.

She was now at 50 yards and was going to get farther away as Zak waited for a shot opportunity. He totally forgot about stopping her so I did the honors. Two mouth grunts brought her to an abrupt stop and as she turned slightly to look toward us, the shot angle presented itself nicely.

I whispered, take the shot if you are comfortable with it.

BOOM!

The big doe whirled and took off up the ridge, vanishing from sight quickly.

The small doe still stood there looking around.

Zak said, should I shoot the small one?

I hesitated.

He had two tags, one either sex tag and one antlerless tag. If he filled the buck tag now with a doe, he wasn't going to get another for the regular season coming up.

I believed he had hit the big doe but didn't know how well. But if he shot the little one, it would be possible for him to fill both tags - including the only one he had to use on a buck.

I told him it was his decision but pointed out that she was pretty small. And dumb. But, since he was looking for his first deer, I left the decision up to him.

He ultimately chose not to take the small one and she eventually wandered off the same direction the big doe had gone.

We waited for 30 minutes...which drove Zak a bit crazy...before climbing down to look for blood.

I found blood immediately but it wasn't very much. I followed the blood trail for 30 yards up to the neighbors property. The blood trail remained consistent but light all the way.

She was heading up the neighbors ridge toward a major bedding area that we routinely push during regular season.

Unsure of what kind of hit that Zak had put on the doe, I decided to back off.

My husband and cousin were due to come out about lunch time to push the ridge for Zak. Perhaps they would find her or if she was still alive, push her back to us.

I called my husband and Zak's mother to tell them what had happened and what the plan was.

Zak and I climbed back up into the stand to wait.

The wind increased otherwise things were dead... Except for the squirrels and a couple groups of turkeys, including some nice toms. I called to some of the toms cause I had my bow with me. They answered me a couple times but never came close.

Zak was bored and hungry so a couple hours later we headed into town to get lunch. We got it to go to eat in the cabin. When we returned, my husband and cousin had just arrived.

We finished lunch and prepared to push the ridge.

Zak and I headed back to the stand and the guys headed for the opposite end of the ridge.

They radioed us when they started heading our direction. It wasn't but a few seconds when my husband said that a deer had took off and was heading north. Not a good direction for us but it could easily change directions before getting to us.

So we watched and waited. Near the edge of the field about 200 yards to the north, the squirrels suddenly started barking. We looked and looked but with so many leaves still on the trees, visibility was limited. We saw nothing.

A few minutes later my cousin radios and says NICE ONE CUTTING BACK ON US! He repeats, that was a nice one!. However, it definitely wasn't coming our way.

Zak was disappointed.

Finally we see the guys approaching. The nice one had jumped up near the area that Zak's doe had ran. So we are wondering about it.

The guys are finished with the drive so Zak and I climb down to help search for his deer.

I had marked where I stopped following the blood trail so we could pick it up again easily.

We followed it a bit further, eventually finding a small piece of flesh on a bush at about the foot and a half level and another small piece of flesh on the leaves.

But the blood was becoming scarce quickly. And finally, it was lost completely.

Finally, as a last resort, the 4 of us spread out to walk the area the doe had headed.

With areas of thick brush, there were places she could be laying.

We walked and searched but found nothing.

Zak was disppointed but basically confirmed what we suspected. He had shot low and the wound was simply a minor belly wound. He said he didn't realize she was 50 yards away and had aimed as if she were about 30. Since he was using my shotgun, after he described how much bead he had used, I was certain he had shot low. At 50 yards a full bead is needed and he had used less.

Ah well, its all part of the learning process.

Zak and I stayed a couple more hours but he was restless. So at 4pm I went for a walk along the swamp edge and up through some evergreens to see if anything was lingering there that might run towards Zak.

No such luck.

So we packed up and headed for home.

The regular season is only a few weeks away and Zak will get another chance I'm sure.

He has a story to tell, an experience to share even though he doesn't have a deer to show...at least not yet.

With the ice broken now, Zak will be in a stand by himself during the regular season with a radio by which he will receive any needed coaching. Other members of the group will be nearby as well.

The days of sharing a stand are now over as Zak has shown he handles himself and the gun well enough that a side by side coach is no longer needed.

All he needs now is some advice, some experience, and a whole lot of luck! biggrin.gif 0 30895 Took a Teen Hunting 1 0 0 0 260514 0 6947 TNheadhunter 1 1 74.234.214.77 1160406131 0 man, there is nothing better than deer hunting... 0 30869 0 0 0 0 260515 0 6972 NY Bowhunter22 1 1 70.16.61.49 1160406574 0

But this lady loves to hunt whether I shoot anything or not.

My husband hunts some but he doesn't love it like I do.

My cousin and main hunting partner calls me a diehard and I use this nickname on another forum. wink.gif

I love everything about deer hunting. And I also enjoy turkey hunting and even a little squirrel hunting.

If I could hunt every day, 365 days a year, I'd probably come very close to doing so.

If I had the money, I'd hunt deer all over the place. And maybe a few other species as well. wink.gif

Its simply awesome to be in the stand before sun up, listening as the night sounds change to early morning sounds.

The owl screeches are replaced by sandhill crane calls. The turkeys make their presence known by crashing out of their roosts and then clucking or gobbling as they head out to Lord only knows where.

The squirrels and chipmunks (chips depending on time of season) begin their routines making entirely too much noise.

And then theres always the anticipated crunch crunch of a deer slowly making its way through the forest.

And the heart starts to pound as the adrenaline starts to rush...especially if the bugger is coming up from behind you or you can't see it yet but you know its coming...

Oh man...forget it guys...
