that is the smallest gun anybody would say to take. Myself I wouldnt take a long shot with it, loses a lot of velocity fast! I would rather have a .300 or 30-06. A .270 is taking a chance, you must make a perfect shot using that rifle.

I've seen quite a few bulls taken with a .270, but every shot has to right where it is supposed to be. I shoot a 7mm mag. and it is still a little light on bullet weight. I woud strongly recomend a .30 caliber or better for elk or larger. Everyone out there has there favorite caliber and will say that theirs is the best, but the fact of the matter is that you have to know where your bullet is going to hit every time. I'm sure you know, sometimes and inch might mean the difference between a clean kill or a twelve hour track, or a lost animal.
Some of the calibers that I would recomend for elk would bee any of the .300 mag calibers ( wsm, ultramag, wby mag, rem mag ) or .340 wby mag, .325 mag, .338 rem mag, .375 mag.
I don't now how much money you want to spend, but if you had an unlimited amount of money to spend on ONE gun to kill BIG game with, I would definately check out the .33.378, or the .30-.378 weatherby magnum. I have shot this rifle, and have studdied the balistics, and in my mind, any of these cartridges is probably the best elk rifles that I have ever shot. You can pick them up from Weatherby for about $1100. Hand loading these rounds will push a 265gr bullet at about 3400fps. Besides Lazzeroni, these ballistics are almost unmatched.
Check them out.
