so, im going to try to get a deer ahead because im going the next state over to missouri the 14th of september so i can hunt the opening day of bow season up there on the 15th, i dont know what im going to shoot yet, but i'll get something. i dont care of the name, it dont matter. good luck all.

Has anyone else been hunting lately, when do all your seasons open? I had a doe come in today but am going to wait a week before shooting a doe, Im waitin for the big one. good luck

I start Sunday and am taking a weeks vacations to try to sick one early on State ground before the pressure gets too heavy. Congrats on the doe!!

I have hunted all day everyday since the Ohio opener (4 days) and seen very little action. First day saw nothing. Yesterday I bumped a 140 10 pointer walking in at 1 pm and thats the only deer I have seen. I have hunted field edges, I have hunted transition points, I have even hunted over a water hole. Its really warm so Im sure thats effecting it some but do you guys have any suggestions on where to try next. Im hunting a huge farm with 40 acres of corn and 50 acres of beans. There is a small water hole in the dead center of the crops but very little cover. make sure you sit in stands that the wind favors your spot.
make sure you know the distances your animals are at. judging how far animals are is very important in bowhunting.

Just slide the wax up and down the string. There is usually some small clumps of wax left over...i work my fingers around the string to rub it in. They make bow wax you can pick up at any store that sells huntin stuff. Its like a chapstick tube except you push it out with your finger from the bottom. Run it up and down the string then melt it in with friction from your fingers around the bowstring movin up and down. I just love to shoot instinct though and i learnt how to shoot with my fingers so i really want to get a recurve. I bet your right casper, they are moving after hours. The only problem I am having is that next to the property I am hunting is farm that was REALLY timber cut 5 years ago and all thats there now is brush and tight stuff so for all accounts the deer have about 100 acres of bedding area. In this area of NY (Adirondacks), there are around 10 deer per squre mile. Where I live in south central NY, there are around 30-35.

I've been out 3 nights so far and seen a total of 2 deer. I have a few friends who have tagged does, but the movement has been pretty poor so far from what we have seen. The weather didn't help on Day 1. I got rained out in the AM and about blown out of the stand by brutal winds in the PM!

I have high hopes for Thursday. Weather.com is calling for almost a 20 degree temperature drop from 80's on Wednesday to high of 63 on Thursday, and I am free to hunt after noon that day. I may get my chance to stock the freezer then!

If you can, buy scent control clothing. Doesnt matter what brand. Rubber boots, and dont put no smelly stuff on you. No smelly shampoos, use scent free soaps. No goin out on friday to the club with cologne or wherever and goin huntin sat. Scent control is one of, if not the biggest factor of gettin a deer within bow range. Because of a race in Reno does not look like I get to hunt the opener with a rifle. I get to stay home with horses, dogs, and barn cats. Yippee.

Good luck WapitiBob on the rifle hunt. If you are hunting area 92 (resident) in Wyoming watch for wolves and grizzlies. Both are active in this area now which in years past were not as prevelent. A friend told me yesterday that he spoke with someone he trusted who told him that he had watched two wolves push a herd of elk (~100) out into the lowland sagebrush flats and they were kicking up the dust and did not look like they were stopping anytime soon. I hope they leave a few for us to follow around. The wolves killed a spike and left it laying dead without even eating it. I had it on my old bow. I liked the rest for the most part because it keeps your arrow in place no matter what you do with your bow....problem is fletching. It tore up my vanes so easily. It wasnt worth the money to buy new arrows or to get the refletched all the time. Maybe feathers work better. I like to apply it them rub it in with a piece of paper bag. We have some VitaRack clover in, but are holding out to hunt it a little later on. Our usual slick-head factory areas just aren't producing as well as they usually do early on, but like I said, it's still early! Sometimes we just can't control the outcome of deer hunting. We do our best and end up not getting what we expect. I've lost two deer over the years under similar circumstances, I guess those deer were meant for the coyotes too. That's the beauty of hunting whitetails, just when you think you know something they prove you wrong.

Most of the time, the deer will be at the top of the ridge smelling for intruders. With the wind advantage, the deer will not smell you. it will also be a good idea to bring some binoculars to watch the inside of the woods for deer. As for the deer in my area, lets just say I can count no fewer than 10 deer per day in my own yard. Suffice to say they are pretty thick. I think I will just post up in my wife's garden. passed a 6 pointer tonight, and about 20 does also. i was watching a 12 pt. and a non-typical bigger than him about 60 yards out in the feild tonight. both of those big deer will go anywhere from 155 to 170, some big ones. it was about 15 degree's cooler this evening then it has been in a week or so, so the deer were out in numbers. i'll get one soon.

Just put up a stand the other day on some new land i got permission to hunt. I know there is a couple of big ones in there. It was fairly cold today and snowing. All i saw was a busted up 3, but it is supposed to stay cold i am feeling good about this weekend

hows everyone doing, seeing any deer? Over the weekend i saw a real young 6 pointer and 2 does. the does didn't come into range otherwise we'd have 5 more pts. I'm trying, next doe that comes into range is toast. Haven't seen any good bucks yet this year, hunting is always good around halloween though so we'll see in a week or two. good luck

I was hunting state ground Saturday. Had four does and a decent 2 1/2 year old 8 pt buck come through. I could have shot one doe and the buck but he needs to grow a bit and I have the freezer pretty well stocked and it would have been a long drag out. In the evening I hunted in a driving rain for two and a half hours. Passed on a couple of more does waiting on the buck who would not come out. Eneded up jumping him on the way out while he was freshening the OTHER scape as opposed to the one I was hunting :roll: There is always next weekend and the rut is coming.

Good luck! well i just can't seem to see what im looking for so far. over the weekend saw a spike with just one spike. watched him make a rub 10 yds from my stand and a small 5 pointer. Tonight i saw 2 nice does, but it was last 15 min of shooting light and she just wouldn't come into range. Im gonna try again tomorrow. This weekend is rifle opener in Mn and im hopeing i can get the big boy.

Jeepin when you get back lets here how it went in Missouri.

Well I came up dry in Missouri. Seven day hunt and saw a booner day 2 and passed on him at 37 yards I would have had to shoot from an awkward position and I did not want to chance it. Grunted at him to turn him toward my trail and he stopped for a long while looking my way for the other buck. He took another step and I grunted again and he spooked but not hard back toward heavy cover. I hunted him hard the rest of the week. Other wise the Buck Roar Worked great. I called in several 13o to 140 class buck in the 3 1/2 year old range but out there I am really looking for a 4 1/2 150 or better. 2,000 acres and 3 people hunting it split pretty even between crp, timber, ag crops.

Weather was really a problem with southernly winds nearly every hunt and temperatures in the 60's and 70's. The can wasn't really effective till the last couple of days. But I had a lot of fun, called in a lot of bucks by grunting and passed on a lot of younger deer. Grunted in one 3 1/2 YO eight point I called Hollywood a very pretty buck. He was totally symetrical with a goldish colored rack. He'll be a 150 class next yea if he makes it through rifle season and the winter.

With shotgun starting in Illinois and that thing called work I won't be out till Thanksgiving weekend. I don't have a tag for first season shotgun.

well at least you saw some deer, should have made for a pretty fun trip though. Good luck next time you go out.
anybody else doin any hunting? lets here from some others on how their seaons have gone so far. haven't really heard from anyone else lately. Well I think I put up as most points as I am going to do this year. Sorry guys I thought I would do a little better, but at least we got some points. My last chance to shoot something bigger will be this weekemd. Last 2 days of rifle here in Mn. I can only shoot another buck if my dad is hunting at the same time so then I would be able to use his tag. He works afternoons so isn't home when I get out of school. I am going to try to stick a doe with my bow after gun season though, but thats about it.

Well we picked up a new batch of soldiers on the 9th and being a drill sergeant I've been working 17 hour days since then....and I've also been battling 2 kidney stones so when I don't work I'm laid up in the bed when the painkillers wear off- so it's been pretty rough. Two nights ago I had a huge 9 point in my backyard and last night there was a seven point with about an 18 in. spread 15 yards from my back door. So if I can get time to go and get over this sickness I hopefully will score. I'm headed to Mississippi from 19-31 December so I know I'll get us some points then.
