Suppose to be nice tomorrow, then snow all the way until next Weds. for the mountains.... Suppose to go scouting next weekend again, but it doesnt look like we will be able to get in there... Oh well, thats huntin...... Maybe I will get lucky!!!!

Well, took the wheelers up scouting today. Didnt get too far in there. This system that came through dumped about 4 ft of snow. I did manage to get to my honey hole. Not a freakin track. They where in there 2 weeks ago. They have to be held up in the dark timber. I dont think they headed back to there wintering area. Its going to be a tough one this year. I think I will leave my bow at home and take the ole shotgun with me opening day (April 9th), since we will probably be hunting that dark timber and doing a whole lot of hiking....
I am planning on packing all my camping gear on my wheeler and heading in there opening weekend, since we cant get vehicles in there. My buddies wont do it... wimps..... They have been spoiled by there RV trailers... You cant get them to sleep in a tent now... So I guess, they are going to ride an hour every morning to get to our area...

Well I got some bad news... I was on my way to school this mornin and seen them 4 toms standing in a field... But not where they were usually at. They are moving away from where they have been for the last couple of weeks. I know where they are headed. They are slowly going though. They are still on the land i hunt. I have a good idea exactly where they are heading. But I am going to have to get permission from the land owner to hunt were they are going. So I am hoping I can go get permission this weekend.
Hope yall are having better luck.

Congrats NC!!!!!!!! Same as what Benelli said......... Maybe they can do something about the pics or trust you enough to believe of what you say the bird is!!!!
Good news on my end... Found a new area....... I LOVE GAME WARDENS!
Found out this week where some birds are in an area that I have never hunting just by talking to a game warden at Taco Bell... He told me of an area that has alot of birds, but hardly anyone goes in there because it is a Wilderness Area. The trail head is only 30 minutes from my house, so I drove up there yesterday after work. Hiked in about 4 miles, through out a call, WHAMMM!!! One hammered right away.... So, I am back packing in there Friday afternoon and hunt for the weekend...
So hopefully, I will have something good to post Monday...

Randall... Once you get your pics up and Randolph views them...and gives you a score. Which I believe if all given information on your bird is matching with the photos. Your score for it would be 51.25 with yours...

Well our school is on Spring Break... Started Yesterday and lasts till the 17th so i think i will be getting up early every morning and out into the woods to try and locate some birds. I havent seen those 4 toms any where. I think they eather went some where else or are hanging out in the woods and not in the fields.I aint seen them jakes or the hens anymore either.... They just disappeared... I need to find some birds over my spring break otherwise i dont have a clue where I will be setting up on the following saturday after we get back from break which is the 22nd and thats youth season. So i am hoping to find some birds, or atleast get permission from someone else. Anyone got any advice for me? Im not sure what to do.
Thanks,

Well I feel like an idiot... I went out and checked a couple of places today.. Left the house around quarter till 4.Not really scouting just making a call or two trying to see or hear any birds. I left one field..went to another made some yelps and cutts on my Diamond Cutter Mouth Call, Didnt hear anything so then i figured ill try a box call. So pulled out the Lynch Long Beard and made a couple of yelps and cutts, put it away. Then i pulled out The Freak Crystal. Cutted on it a few times then shut up. Stuck around only for about 5 more minutes then winded up walking around and up to my Grandfathers house, i sat down on the bank to fix my vest because my box call kept squeeking everytime i walked, fixed that and then just laid back to relax. I must have doesed off because i woke up, seen the sun was not where it was when i dosed off so looked at the screen on my phone. 6:51! I grabbed my vest through it back on and was booking it back towards the house.Well booking it was an understatement. See I had to till up the garden today and i think thats why i fell asleep. Im not quite sure. Anyways came home and waited for my dad to get back. When he came in i told him that i didnt hear or see anything. Then i told him how i fell asleep. Then he goes, You didnt see those birds? and i said What birds?!?!? And he told me that there was a couple of toms and hens out. Then i kind of smacked myself on the forehead.Im not gonna fall asleep anymore nor move as much. Hey what can i say? Im learning.
Just figured id let you know that dad found some birds... That made my day hearing that.

yea guys i got the itch as well. I went out with my buddie today again on the rez and i did some more callin and i ended up callin in two nice ones and he missed them both today with his bow. But its really starting to get to me becuase i get these birds comming in and i cant shoot . o well at least im geting pratice callin and im still having fun. o and benelli boy dont feel bad about fallin asleep( 2 years ago i went back to my truck to get some water and i ended up falling asleep on the back of the truck and woke up to 2 toms less than 10 yards from me and gobbling there heads off and i couldent get to my gun cuz they were looking right at me. And also this was the last day and there was 10 mins left in the season when this happened. so i ened up going without a bird that year)
StruttinBuck
Apr 11 2006, 09:13 AM
I would still take him but id be taking a shotgun or a bow or something to back him up with if you could. If not just like you said.. Your getting some good calling practice in.

Apr 11 2006, 10:28 AM
well guys im happy now. last night me and my buddie from the rezz patterend my gun and it parterened extreamly well, and i decide to be nice and let him take it out today and all i got to say is that it is deadly to turkey. My buddie took a jake today at 30 yards and it pritty much took its head off ( it was hanging on by skin). so i think im just going to stick with the load we shot last night and today. What do you guys think?

I got a question for yall...I really want to get a tom this year. So if a jake comes in should i shoot it?I think id probably let it go...I would like to get my first tom this year...but idk...
Whats your opinion? Depending on the sercomstances like youth season... Id hold out... but if it were getting close to the end of season and i havent shot a bird all season... then id let em have it... But otherwise i think i am gonna hold out for a tom.
letsgohuntn
Apr 14 2006, 09:56 PM
Hey Benelli,
This is just my opinion. If you want a mature tom, hold out. Just like deer hunting. If you want a good deer,Dont shoot the first spike that comes down the trail, wait for a mature boy to come in. And if its close to end of the season and a jake gives you the chance, take him....
I am no exspert on turkey hunting, but I have found that when a jake comes in, usually there is a tom near by and he is trying to beat him to the punch. Last year, I called up two jakes and they came in running. I never could draw my bow back on them, because they where on top of me... So I quit calling and they walked away. 10 minutes later I started calling again, and I heard a gobble. I thought it was those jakes. but a nice tom came strutting down the trail and I missed him....
Just my 2 cents...
StruttinBuck
Apr 15 2006, 10:51 AM
Thanks for the advice. I am going to try and hold out for a big one. Last year.. when i killed that jake in the picture above...after i shot me and dad walked out there and dad said look to your left. I looked and there were 2 toms struting and a bunch of hens probably 150 yards away across the creek where the jake crossed at. They seen us, and walked very fast into the woods. So i do know what you mean about jakes and toms following. But hey i was happy. After missing 2 times before and finally connecting on a bird I was happy.
BenelliBoy
P.S. O yea those 2 misses where back in my first year turkey hunting, in 2002 i believe, and i wasnt putting my head down on the stock. The birds i shot at where a big tom and a jake. After missing two. Now putting my head down on the stock is automatic. When i shot my 12 Gauge the other day with 2 ozers. I had the gun as deep and pushed back into my shoulder as it would go, and i had my cheek on the stock and i was pushing down on it preatty hard to keep it there. When i shot all the recoil i think went to my cheek. Im not sure. The only recoil i felt from it was on my cheek. On my shoulder it just felt like i was shooting my 20 gauge 7/8 oz. loads. I didnt notice it.
