I'm with you guys it can't come quick enough. Mild winter and lots of birds around. This team will be tough to beat.
shootermcgavin
By the way, Hunter2121 is on Team 4... I'll be sure to give him the blanks when we go out... LOL j/k

Here is one I killed with my brother in the later part of Last season. This guy was 21 Pounds had a 10 Inch Beard with 1 1/2 Spurs. The last couple years with the snowfall only around 110 to 125 Inches we have killed some hawgs. I'm pretty confident the you boys are talking we will be there at the end.

Hey guys one of my best strategies for turkeys is stalking them.
Alot of people say you can't sneak up on a turkey, wrong. With a little wind to cover your noise & movements it has worked for me, especially late season when the birds are call shy & there is more cover.
One of the things I like to use to my advantage is ditches & creeks. I always were knee high rubber boots or hip waders to get down in the creek & sneak in undetected. Sometimes within range, other times just to get ahead of the bird, then set up & wait for him or call him in. It is a lot harder to call them back to where they have already been. If they are gobbling you can be in the bottom of the creek & not have to peek up over the edge if you can hear them. They are just letting the hens & you know where they are.
My second best piece of advice is to hunt as late as you can. I have killed most of my birds 9:00-12:48, I had 12 minutes to spare. 1:00 is ending time here in ILL.
The birds in my areas are very patternable. They have early morning, mid morning & midday spots they like to check out. Beat them to these spots or sneak in on them in these spots & the battle is half over.
I hope to have some birds put to bed by sunset tomorrow for my wifes opener mon. biggrin.gif

I believe that God will forgive my sins if I ask him in person. I dont think that I have to say it in front of a preast or a minister or a what ever you want to call him. I can talk to god and worship him and love him within myself without goin to church. My church is inside of me. He said that we should attend church. But I dont think he stated that we have to attend it inside of a building. Dont get me wrong. I'm not trying to be mean. I love a good conversation/disagreement. I love stating my point and listening to others points as well.

[6] If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
[7] But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
[8] If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
[9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
[10] If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

LP,

These are some questions I have and some of them may make you mad.

1) The bible could just be a story someone wrote a long time ago. How do we know that its gods words?

2) The bible could have been change many times over the years. If these are Gods word, how do we know that they are his and not someone esles that change something a thousand years ago?

3) The world was created in 7 days? The land, the water, the sun? Couldnt it have been a chemical reaction to cause this? 0 23975 0 0 0 0 220120 0 3882 hunthard 1 1 24.229.85.165 1145246431 0

However, when you look at the Bible. And I might add...Many do not believe its the word of God. And if you don't? I can not discuss spirituall things with you. Because their is no Athourity to basis our discussion on.

However, if you do believe the Bible. The Church take's a whole different meaning. Christ is the Head of the church, christians are the Body of Christ. Christ died for the church. The church is the Bride of Christ. Are we christians perfect NOOOOOOO WAAAYYYY far from it! We are told Christ is the Savior of the body his Church.

More to come.

Remember if you let a Hipocrit come between You and God? That Hiporcit is closer to God than you are.

Check through the archives and you will find this topic over and over. The question is, will a 17HMR kill a Coyote. The answer is yes, with well placed shots inside a reasonable range. The next question is, are you very under gunned hunting coyotes with a 17HMR and the answer is absolutely YES. Sorry Skinnykid but I dont believe for one minute that anyone is consistantly killing Coyotes at 200 yards with a 17HMR. The round has insufficient energy at 200 yards to get it done with any regularity and I think anyone who tries is doing the animal a diservice. Just my .02. Shooting an animal at 1000yds is like target practice. Its more like being a snipper on a hillside and waiting for your contract to walk out in front of you. Im not going to say that if you choose to hunt this way you are wrong, but for me I would not hunt this way. That is why I probably prefer to hunt with a bow. I also feel this is why B&C requires a higher minimal score to enter your animal into the record books...For example the minimum score for a Whitetail Deer, Typical is 160 B&C and Pope and Young requires a minimum of 125 for a Whitetail Deer, Typical.

This is how Boone and Crocket Define Fair Chase and Hunting Ethics

FAIR CHASE, as defined by the Boone and Crockett Club, is the ethical, sportsmanlike, and lawful pursuit and taking of any free-ranging wild, native North American big game animal in a manner that does not give the hunter an improper advantage over such animals.

HUNTER ETHICS
Fundamental to all hunting is the concept of conservation of natural resources. Hunting in today's world involves the regulated harvest of individual animals in a manner that conserves, protects, and perpetuates the hunted population. The hunter engages in a one-to-one relationship with the quarry and his or her hunting should be guided by a hierarchy of ethics related to hunting, which includes the following tenets:

1. Obey all applicable laws and regulations.

2. Respect the customs of the locale where the hunting occurs.

3. Exercise a personal code of behavior that reflects favorably on your abilities and sensibilities as a hunter.

4. Attain and maintain the skills necessary to make the kill as certain and quick as possible.

5. Behave in a way that will bring no dishonor to either the hunter, the hunted, or the environment.

6. Recognize that these tenets are intended to enhance the hunter's experience of the relationship between predator and prey, which is one of the most fundamental relationships of humans and their environment. 0 26717 0 0 0 0 220134 0 3001 WyoWapati 1 1 69.146.56.39 1145248467 0 HOYT- VIPER TECH 0 26568 0 0 0 0 220135 0 2535 jrbush 0 1 147.226.248.236 1145249098 0 Pretty funny how this came up just before Easter eh?

Here is the Reader Digest illustration for any of you still wondering what it takes to be in Heaven when you die:

When Jesus was crucified, two condemned theives were as well. The other two men were convicted in a Roman court under Pontius Pilate's rule, and both were guilty. The sentence: crucifiction.

One criminal hanging on the cross scoffed Jesus and said something to effect of, If you are the Messiah, free yourself and us as well. When Jesus did not, the criminal cursed Jesus. (the reason Jesus did not, is another discussion about how Jesus was paying the penalty for man's sin)
(Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ does a beautiful job of showing this)

The other criminal saw how Jesus was dying on the cross, and said to him Remember me when you enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus replied back and said something like, today you will be in Paradise.

Sorry, I don't have my Bible with me so I shot from the hip, but anyways...

What does this say about the question at hand? Hmnn, lets think for a minute? Why did the thief who saw Jesus and believed he was the Messiah make it into Heaven?

Because he Believed In Christ, he saw that Christ was dying for him. At that moment, he was a Christian. There was no long list of works, or further acts to demonstrate he was worthy of Heaven (which would of made it really hard since he was nailed to a cross). It was the simple act of one thing, and one thing only: Faith in Christ, and Faith alone.

The requirement, if you will, is the same for all us, and that is why the Message of Salvation is and always will be just as simple as that.

Christ has risen! Praise God.
Happy Easter everyone. 0 23975 0 0 0 0 220136 0 2502 NY BUCK HUNTER 1 1 168.169.213.82 1145252960 0 I go out just before dark and I also will use locator calls, usually do a few Yelps and some gobbles, Ive been told this, that turkeys will gobble before the fly up into there roost for the night, so if you hear a gobble, you dont need to call him away from his hens if he has any. I think my wife is going to Walgreen today to get a disk made, so hopefully they will be on here tonight. Had to hunt Easter eggs yesterday with the little guy.
Well remember the 2 pointers I gave about a week ago. Well I had to use them both. I killed my bird at 12:50, 1:00 ending time here, & I had to sneak up on him.
I was on my way towards the truck. I was going to check out the creek bottom on the way out. This is where my dad killed his bird at about sunrise. We roosted them there the night before.
I saw a hen across the creek in the pasture about 200 yards from me. I snuk down the creek a little. Looked over the bank & saw a gobbler strutting with her now. Snuk down the creek some more look up & they were 96yrds across the open pasture. I watched them for 15 min. he was strutting the whole time in the shade of a tree, it was 84 degrees. The hen was 20 yards away, from him, laying in the shade of another tree. I was running out of time & options. There were 2 trees in the pasture that were lined up. The second tree I ranged at 52 yards, so I knew if I could get to it I would have about a 45yrd shot. I waited for him to turn fan but towards me them I shuk up to the first tree, peeked around the tree & he had not seen me but she had. She had her head up looking at me. I was still 65 yards. I waited for him to spin but towards me again. Then I snuk to the next tree. She got up & walked away quickly but did not put, thankfully. I lowered my gun around the tree & pointed it at him. He Dropped his fan & started to walk away. I Dropped him. I ran up he was done.
I ranged back to the tree I shot him from, 44 yards.
I shoot 3 1/2 1 7/8 oz #7 in federal new heavyweight.
I had pattern them at 40 & it was a real nice patter. I think I would have shot up to 50 yards with these shell if I had to. This was all the closer I was getting to this bird.
I watched him for about 35-40 min. total, strutting the whole time, not one gobble !
That is how they get to be 26 lbs.

My dream season continues with a trip to Utah. This whole hunt was started 3 years ago when I sent a PM to Hal on here about his hunt in Utah. He put me in touch with Greg his brother who lives out there. That started the ball running and it took me 3 years to draw a tag. In those 3 years I got to know Greg some and was really looking forward to the trip.

First morning out is kind of chilly and we don't hear much on the roost. So we go off in search of something wanting to gobble. I spot some birds but we don't see exactly what they are. Turns out to be a group of hens, jakes and one longbeard. We ended up fooling with them for some 2 hrs before they decided time to head off. These were Merriams and it was still a couple weeks early for them. After trying to locate some more birds with no luck we call it an afternoon. Game plan in the evening is to try and locate some Rio's in another part of the unit. At fly up time I use my coyote howler and don't hear anything. Good thing Greg was standing up the hill and away from me because he heard 2 gobble at the call that I couldn't.

2nd morning we're trying to set up on the bird that was gobbling the most but he's in an area that's hard to find a good spot. We finally set up inside 75 yards. He's gobbling and turns out to be 2 longbeards. They fly down with several hens to the bottom of the canyon. We chase them up the next canyon only to have them come into 70 yards and go back down the canyon and up the canyon they started at. I'm getting frustrated with these birds. So it's around 9:30 and we get above where we think they are but they won't gobble to anything now. So we just sit down and try and catch our breath. Having a snack and talking for 30 some minutes. They we both hear a bird spitting and drumming and look at each other with amazement. I try and put my facemask on a grab my gun. This is one of the worst spots to see a turkey. He's within 30 yards and can't see over the hill 10 yards. After several anxious minutes 3 hens start putting and fly across the canyon. Don't know what spooked them but thought we were done. Things calmed down and I can hear another bird strutting below. Greg does some light calling and finally the bird gobbles for the first time. He's close but no way to see. Several more minutes pass and I can finally see his head and fans out briefly. No shot there have to let him continue to walk up the hill and closer. Move my gun around the side of a bush and his pops out looking. BANG. So brushy I couldn't see him and jump up and he didn't move. Something like 12 yards. FINALLY. We heard him start gobbling at 6:04 and I killed him at 10:07. Basically 4 hrs of chasing him. What a nice bird he turned out to be. 19.1 lbs, 9 Beard, 1 1/8 and 1 1/16 Spurs. I was told they just don't grow spurs like that out there. He was a Rio with some Merriams in him.

With my tag filled. He has a friend who's boy drew a tag. Wanted to know if I wanted to go with them the next morning. I say definately. We call in a bird off the roost but it doesn't offer a good shoot. Then we try and get a gobble out of this canyon but to no avail. Sometime after 10 we locate a bird and try and get him to work. Setting up on him doesn't work. But we hear a bird way off. Rush to get close to him and check him again. He gobbles close. They set up I dive for cover with the rest of our group. Start calling and he cuts me off. Just start yelping loud on the both almost non stop. He gobbles his way right in. I hear spitting and drumming and gobbling close. BOOM. Stand up and see the bird flopping. Now that was fun. Turns out he's a Merriam. Nate's first turkey. I never met them before that morning but it sure was my pleasure to be there and help them out. What a bonus to a great trip.

The turkeys were gobbling like crazy this morning. Another hunter got between me & most of the birds so I headed back to a field they were gobbling in. I saw 2 nice birds jumping up & fighting in the field. I got down in the creek & started working closer to them when the other hunter shot once, back behind me. I peaked up over the bank & the 2 gobblers were gone, but there was another gobbler at the far end of the field heading to the big creek. So I got back in the creek & hot footed it to cut him off. I was about 200 yards from where I thought he would be when he gobbled. So I kept sneaking towards him. He gobbled a few more time, letting me know were he was with out having to peak up out over the back. I was within 100 yards of him I peaked up over the bank, he was 70-80 yards away. I called a couple of time he headed my way, I was looking though tall grass. I had an opening in front of me & was ready, then he started putting & turned back. He must have made me out in the grass. I raised up a little over the grass & dropped him at about 30+ yards

21# 10oz

That 21# was easier to pack out.

Congrats Again!! Another Nice Bird...You are having a good season between you, your wife and your dad. We open a week from today and I can't wait to get in the woods. Went down Sunday morning to listen and they were gobblin like crazy.

have hunted hard for 2 days now. No luck. I thought i had mine this morning though. If he would have come another 20 yards, i had a shot. The birds are not responding to calls at all. Some are with hens some are not. The longbeard this morning had 4 jakes with him. 3 of them came into the decoy. he and another Jake stayed out of range. I will just keep grinding away. i want us to win this thing. Good Luck to the rest of you.

My season starts tomorrow with my sister. We are going to the same spot I heard about 15 different toms gobbling in the area with my mom two weeks ago. I have to let my sister shoot the first bird that comes in because she is still in college and cant miss much. Im a senior in high school and it doesnt really matter if i miss half of a day. Wish us luck. Hope to have some pics of a double tomorrow
HUNTIN162

CONGRATULATIONS jghoffman12
Better late then never, on hearing from you.
That really will help get us in the running. A couple more birds & we can win this thing.
Sounds like you had a great season. How old is your boy?
Hope you got a good pic of you, your boy & the turkey to show us.
I have only hunted easterns, but after seeing some of the pics posted of some pretty Merriams. I think that I might have to try for one of those beauties.
Do you hunt them any different ?
HUNTIN162

Congrats jghoffman12!! Sounds like you to had a good season. I will hopefully help add to the total here shortly...We are on alot of birds but they are henned up real bad. Started getting a little frustrated this past weekend but it will all work out...it always does. Congrats again on your birds!
jghoffman12
Here's a picture of my son, Hunter, with our bird. I'll have pictures of the merriams in a week or two. had a lot of fun with the merriams. they were gobbling all day long. i shot mine around 5 pm and my buddy shot his just before noon. one thing i noticed is that they have a higher pitched gobble and they really preferred a higher pitched slate call. gobbled their heads off at my Freak call but wouldn't answer my friend's mouth call.user posted image

Those are two good looking trophies !

Got one more shot at em this weekend... going to where we worked a pretty decent tom for about 3 hours... not too many people know about this place, so we're hoping he hasn't been taken yet. I'll have some pics for you guys come Sunday....
hunter2121
Sorry guys... Hunter2121 from team four here....

Shooter thinks he is going to score, but I might have to boost our teams points!!

haha... j/k

Shooter had a chance at him a few week-ends back, but spooked him when he got impatient! smile.gif
shootermcgavin
I didn't get impatient... you had a date, and wanted to leave. I could have sat there all day!

Look at this guy trying to come to our camp and stir things up...
HUNTIN162
If you guy are going to that burial ground hunter 2121 showed pic of you are braver then me.
Just remember your tape & scales this time shooter.

Good luck !
hunter2121
Yep, we'll be there. We actually had a chance at a few jakes, but since we already got ao bird, we let them go, joping that they will be big old toms, next year!

I will try to give shooter the first opportunity, but if the tom doesn't co-operate, well then I might have to bag him myself!

Shooter will have to go and flush them out of the grave yard, I'll stay on the other side of hte marsh, haha....
hunter2121
hey HUNTIN162

Well as promised I got shooter a shot, but the look on his face tells you everything!!

Hey it probably won't help us win this thing but I shot a 19.5 Pounder saturday morning at 9:00. The problem is that I snapped all the pictures that I thought I was supposed to and after looking on here I forgot to take one of the tag on his leg. Sorry guys...
