id rather have the '06. you can get so many different bullets from many companies and you can get shells for it anywhere. Plenty of performance for most any north american big game animal in the U.S.

Really a 30-06 is just a .270 in a 30 caliber. They both share the same casing dimensions except the 06 has, of course, a larger diameter for the neck. With an 06, you can get a wider range and choice of bullet wieghts than a .270, which traditionally makes it a popular choice for elk. I've always been a favorite of a .270. Never had a problem dropping anything I've shot with it yet. I do however like my .270 wsm much more than my regular .270. The loads can be a little hotter which means better downrange trajectory and overall bullet penetration. I've shot two elk with it this year so far, and I'm impressed. Not much damage to meat from bullet shock either.

Kinda true, but saying the .30-06 is just a .270 in a 30 caliber is backwards - the '06 hit the market in 1906, and the .270 didn't come out until 1925. So really the .270 is just a necked down '06...but then again, so is the .280 Rem, .25-06 Rem, .22-250, .250 Savage, .284 Win...then there's the 7mm-08 Rem, 8mm-06, .35 Whelen, 7.65x53 Mauser, 7.7x58 Jap...and the list goes on.
I'm assuming he's talking about .270 Win, but still curious which 7mm he's asking about...

Point is, there isn't a significant difference between a 30-06 and a win .270. From a factory load and factory firearm standpoint, you get a little better perfomance downrange from a 30-06 than a .270.

I am a huge fan of the 7mm Rem Mag. Like the others mentioned it is very capable of taking any game found in North America. I prefer the 7 mag over the .270 and 30-06 only because where I live in Wyoming, the faster and flatter 7 mag just performs better. If I ever part with my 7 mag it will be for a 7mm Ultra Mag which is hotter than the 7 mag or the 7mm wsm

The 7mm RUM would be the best choice by far. The 7mm Remington would still be better than the other two by far. The 270 WSM would get next and then the 270 win. the 30-06 would be last. I don't shoot factory junk ammo so i can't take that in to consideration. The 7 mags just offer too much. Good speed long range and excellent power. The 270 if being used just for deer would make a great choice. You would be limited with it hunting for elk. Then the 30-06. the best all around gun I don't think so. What you have with a 30-06 is a big gun with not enought range for the recoil. Sure close range shooting you would be fine. But lots of better choices. Personally I shoot a 300 Remington Ultra Mag and it beats all of them in every way. I can load it down to make it shoot just like the 7 ultra mag and could shoot factory ammo agianst the others and still beat them. It doesn't matter though. I shoot a Mathews now anyway

I would take any rifle capable of delivering lead to lungs. I dont think the deer cares what the caliber is. Of the three I would take a 270. Not because it kills them deader, but because I dont see the need for a gun as big as a 7mm mag for deer hunting alone, and because I hunt with a .243. If you only knew how much ribbing I have listened to about hunting with a pea shooter by guys that swear that the only gun that will kill a deer is the all mighty 30-06. I wouldnt hunt with a 30-06 if you gave me one. Im sure it is just a capable of killing a deer as any other round but it brings back bad memories.

(just for the record, none of their deer were any deader than mine). (also, no disrespect to the 30-06 lovers. Ive just been force fed 30-06 for so long that I wouldnt use one. Probably why I hate sweet potatos. I can remember my grandmothers cold wet hands squeezing my cheeks and ramming spoonfulls of that nasty crap in my mouth.....YUCK!!!!! wont eat them to this day,

I think the 7mm looks better on paper.. But i KNOW i can shoot a 3006 everybit as good as someone with a 7mm.
I used it for 2 years to hunt ground hogs before i bought a 22-250. And i'll tell ya what, you learn to hit a g-hog at 250-300 yards with the 3006.... deer come easy. I used the exact load i used for deer. just 150 grain win. factory loads.
