Hey all-

I was just wondering if you all thought that a number 6 shot (steel 2 3/4 Inch) from a 12ga was too much for pheasants or is it just right, I am pretty new to the whole upland game hunting scene. Thanks for any help.

That is what I use. 6 shot Heavy Dove 2 3/4. Perfect! Do you use High Brass or Low Brass? 0 23971 0 0 0 0 193658 0 3882 hunthard 1 1 24.229.85.165 1134872530 0 Sorry to hear that. I have a Lansky sharpening kit (I bought that while in the Army also). It has the clamp and angle guide. It is a bit cumbersome to set up and use, but it does a good job.

I also have a variety of carbide and ceramic V type sharpeners. They are either the type that you draw the knife through or that you draw down the blade. I have ones made by Lansky, Gatco, Normark, Smith's, and one or two other makers. They are handy to keep in your pocket and good for a quick fix. However, despite thier claims they do not put a razor edge on a knife.

Mostly I use a Smith's Tri Hone along with a butchers steel. Between these two items I can usually get a razor edge on most of my knives. Once you get a knife to this point you should rarely have to use the coarse stone. Just a quick run on the medium and fine stone will do. The butchers steel is what really makes that edge fine.

Most of my friend's have me sharpen thier knives. They have all the same gear as I do. They just have a hard time getting a good edge.

I have found that most folks put way too much pressure on the knife when drawing it across the stone. A light touch is all that is needed. Combine that light touch, holding the right angle for the blade being sharpened, and use of a steel and you will have a good edge. It takes a little practice and patience. 0 23905 0 0 0 0 193663 0 39 Matthew J. Greene 1 1 63.27.160.120 1134876195 0 I think you made a good choice.

All the weapons that you mentioned are good little pistols. The Beretta and the Buckmark are both good shooters.

My personal preference is the Ruger with the heavy barrel. You just cannot go wrong with one of these. That heavy barrel really helps steady your shooting. 0 23792 0 0 0 0 193664 0 137 T.B. 1 1 70.20.82.239 1134879070 0 Brenner,
I'm glad the G-Men won, that really helped the Steelers. I think Indy is going to go perfect and win it. Its all set-up for them. All dome playoff games and a dome Super Bowl. That has the Colts written all over it. If they were to come to some place cold and have to play, forget it. They are strictly a dome team. 0 23965 0 0 0 0 193665 0 1883 stoutk 1 1 12.210.114.234 1134880066 0 congrats..I use to hunt Andruews...anywhere close to you??? 0 23964 0 0 0 0 193666 0 1883 stoutk 1 1 12.210.114.234 1134880234 0 I can't believe you have to hunt with 12 decoys...you think those Ill birds could be fooled by 11??? laugh.gif

Good point Matthew. I use a Diamond Stone. With gentle pressure and a consistant angle you can put a great edge on a knife with them. Ease of sharpening has a lot to do with the hardness of the steel in the blade. A softer steel is easier to sharpen but will dull faster. A shaving sharp blade isn't a necessity for gutting a deer, (my ex bro-in-law once gutted his buck using the metal lid off his Copenhagen can smashed between two rocks to get a jagged edge) but its when you have to push and pull with a dull knife to cut something that accidents happen. 0 23905 0 0 0 0 193675 0 4588 IndHunter 1 1 69.208.132.69 1134900339 0 Nice camera work, even better bulls. 0 23950 0 0 0 0 193676 0 4588 IndHunter 1 1 69.208.132.69 1134900518 0 Good call, you did right. 0 23893 0 0 0 0 193677 0 2718 NJDeerHunter 1 1 207.69.136.203 1134903898 0 I buy the 100 pack from the Walmart in PA. I get 5 shot or 8 shot. 2 3/4 always. They are a low brass load. For the money you cant beat them, plus they are a federal load.

I normally use an ounce of 6 shot for birds up to 30 yards, but if I am on a stand expecting 35 yard plus birds I use ounce and 1/8 5 shot in 1/4 or 1/2 choke.

I tell ya, pheasant hunting is my favorite. If you got a good spot, a good dog and the right shells your in for a heck of a time. I used to live in CO and I always went to Nebraska in the NW part right on the border of SD.
Well I always use High Brass either 4 or 5 shot because the bigger shot has more knock down power which is important because them Roosters are tough and they can definetly outrun you and possibly your dog. Also I suggest put some LEAD in there instead of steel for them roosters, it'll save you money and lead is more powerful too. You get some High Brass 4 or 5 shot going through your barrel and you'll be pretty successful. Let me know of any good Pheasant hunting in Montana now that I'm settled up here. Miles City, I have heard great things but is it worth an 8 hour drive? Hey anyway good luck with the Roosters!

I use a 28 gauge with 7 1/2 shot.
