However for people that try to still hunt around us it makes the deer very nocturnal. while i love to bow hunt and blackpowder hunt dog hunting is very fun. give it a few years though and there will be no dog hunting. judging the size of a deer is very hard though. we have a rule at my club that we can only shoot deer that will not fit in a 5 gallon bucket. if we shoot one that fits we then pay a fine. we have had this rule for about 4 years and we can already see a difference in the size of the deer around us. 0 23593 dog hunting 0 0 0 0 189861 0 4019 buckslayer_005 1 1 150.208.100.2 1133794117 0 woodies have a green head and taste good too! 0 23424 0 0 0 0 189862 0 1883 stoutk 1 1 206.246.188.226 1133794232 0 I will say this...I live in Indiana, but lived in SC during college and 3 years after that and hunted on a plantation that still hunted and also dog hunted on the weekends...if you have never been on a dog hunt you've got to try it at some point in your life...it's hectic, fun, and probably the most exciting hunting I've ever done!

duck season in the closed yesterday and with a recent snow storm and below zero temps goose hunting will be pretty much shut down for me.

went down south west of milwaukee on the Fox river the only open water around and managed one greenhead before the snowstorm started. set up in good field for geese sunday morning but only saw some high migrators headed for illinois.

It would be nice to state your opinion on the question. Oh I dont know somthing klike I am against it and hope that it is never done here. But to attack folks (no one in paticular, just a group) who are doing it as a legal metheod of hunting, shame on you. Dogging is an old tradition in the south.

There are some things that should be left off of forums.

Watch a deer that you are going to pass and count how many times you could have made the shot as they pass you (bow or gun). You will be surprise. Sometime they end up coming from 100 yards out, to directly benieth you.

Don't draw to soon, so many hunters get caught at full draw only to get shaky or impatient and take shots they shouldn't. When a better shot could be made if they waited.

The idea of practicing is so when the opertunity presents its self you don't have to think just react, if your technique is consistant , your instincs will take over and never have to think about your form or if evrything is perfect before you shoot.

Don't get me wrong I take the first opertunity they give me and things can happen quick but that part can't be taught it has to be learned from experience. 0 23585 0 0 0 0 189888 0 795 wmramse 1 1 198.160.96.7 1133801203 0 Ya'll, the deer dog issue has been an enormously hot topic here in AR the last couple of years. Most folks don't want it at all, but don't mind so bad if the dogs would stay off their private land. The converse arguement is that dogs can't read posted signs. Last year there was so much debate over the issue the AGFC decided to make a ruling. The most vocal people on both sides voiced their opinions, and from the AGFC's standpoint there were about equal numbers that both wanted it and wanted it outlawed. Many of those that wanted it outlawed said they'd be okay with keeping it around if the dog runners would do a better job of policing their own - keeping dogs off private land for the most part, but also tagging more of the deer they kill. The dog runner crowd agreed to the terms and the AGFC tabled the decision until next year to give the dog runners one last chance to clean up their act. It's only legal in just a few zones in the state, but even folks up in the mountains (where it isn't legal) have problems with dog runners. These are the type of hunters that give all dog hunters a bad reputation, however well-earned.

In my book I don't believe that running deer dogs is ethical, so I think it should be outlawed. On the other hand, it's a legal method of hunting here in the south, and I'll support every legal method of hunting as long as I live. This is a quote from the Hunt Fair Chase website....

QUOTE
...there are many things in the hunting and habitat management world that are legal, yet can be considered by some to be unethical. Again, it is left for each individual to set his or her own ethical standards. Hopefully, all of our collective decisions will shine positively on hunting, management and its traditions...

Like I said, I personally feel that it is unethical by MY OWN standards, so it doesn't fit into my own personal list of fair chase rules. If it fits into someone else's, fine.

Here's what I posted on the Arkansas Hunting forum:

QUOTE
I haven't chimed in on the dog issue as of yet, but only because I had no personal experience with deer dogs. Opening day of gun season I hunted in zone 11 on some family-owned private land, and had my first run-in with deer dogs. I came across 3 beagles on my way to my stand...trespassing on private land. I imagine the guy driving the white Dodge pickup up and down the road in front of my uncle's house with his arm sticking out of the window holding an antenna was the proud owner. Of course, the dogs didn't know they were trespassing, and it wasn't my land to expel them from, so I let them go on about their business. My uncle despises them, but I didn't go out to shoot dogs. I wanted venison. Besides, they weren't on the trail, and looked like they may have been just passing through. After I got settled into my stand, I could hear some dogs on the run, and could tell they were getting close - well within 200 yards, which would have put them well inside the private land I was hunting. I just sat there and let them push the deer to me. All I saw was a 7 point trot by my stand with his tongue hanging out. He had obviously been run all day. He saw me pull my gun up, but never faltered in his trot - he just looked at me as if to say \I've got bigger things to worry about, buddy.\ He never gave me a decent shot. The dogs never did show up, so I'd much prefer to believe the guy running the dogs (or lazily tracking them from the comfort of his truck if you will) called them off when he saw someone walking in to hunt there. If that's the case, I respect that, especially since my uncle's land borders a young pine plantation on some leased paper land, and I know they run dogs there.

All in all, I didn't see anything but a lazy hunter and some lost dogs...nothing of the caliber I hear so much about from the anti-dog folks. On the other hand, my uncle finds dead deer all the time in his pastures and his creek with a butt full of buckshot or gut shot, or otherwise wounded and not retrieved. Some may be from poachers that don't hunt with dogs, but he's found many with the dogs still on them, chewing their ears and bothering them, both dead and nearly dead.

I'd like to believe that the dog hunters are doing a better job of policing their own ranks. I have a hard time not defending any legal method of hunting, especially one so steeped in tradition and fellowship, because I want everyone to be able to hunt as much as and however they like, as long as they stay within the bounds of the law. The area I hunt in the Ozarks isn't legal for dogs, so we don't have the problems others do with them, which allows me to form my own opinion at my leisure and as I experience deer dogs and their owners. If it came down to a vote I would go with outlawing it, but because it isn't a matter of great importance to me one way or the other, I won't fight to have it either way. I'm lucky to be able to leave it to those to whom it matters.

We headed north to IL and put the W. KY smack down on the geese. We were not on the X, but with the geese in the area running traffic was not a problem. There were 7 of us, so we split up and hunted 2 different groups. We all killed a limit the first day by 10:00. My group got 5 bands that morning out of one group, and we killed out in one volley.

The next day two of the guys had to go back so we were all able to hunt together. Wouldnt you know it, but the first flock that got up off of the river decoyed to 15 yards and we killed 10. Another day of limiting in one volley.

This weekend was definately over to fast. I got in on two volleys, killed 4 geese, and got some more bling for the lanyard. I don't guess you got the gist of what I was saying. Short and simple, I consider ME running deer dogs to be unethical. If you feel it's ethical I'll support you doing it - as long as you obey the law. I got nothing against others doing it as long as it's legal. It just isn't something I don't care to do. As for hunting small game with dogs, well, that's a whole 'nother story. There are many methods of hunting deer - baiting, still hunting known trails, natural food sources, bedding areas, stalking, and so on. Ever try setting up a food plot for rabbits? Quail? I'm not saying you won't ever take any home doing it that way, but deer can be patterned and move about a great deal more than those animals, and dog hunting just isn't necessary to bag 'em. To be fairly successful hunting small game it's almost necessary. Sure it's more efficient to run deer with dogs - you sit in the truck, let the dogs jump deer and run 'em 'til they're tired, tracking them via radio collars and antennas from the comfort of your pickup, then head 'em off and shoot (at) what they're chasing. It's awful hard to field judge a deer at any distance anyway, and one that's running, well, that just ain't right. Not to mention the deer don't just stop when they see you, so almost all your shots will be at a running deer. Again, that's not ethical in my eyes. If you're good at it, more power to ya. Again - it just isn't for me. 0 23593 0 0 0 0 189919 0 2743 nyturkeyduster 1 1 216.162.20.129 1133810460 0 Do you guys think it would be a good idea to use target load on grouse, rabbits and squirrels? Exposed reed or internal, loud and raspy, softer and clean. I just got a Dan Thompson Red dessert howler two days ago. Havent used it yet but i can give you a report if you want. Good videos to watch to learn would be Calling all Coyotes 2. Randy Anderson movies before he started making TRUTH videos. My guess is if you keep practicing the muscles in your upper body will become strong enough to stabilize the shaking. You should be able to pull, aim and bring the bow string back (don't fire)...REPEAT for 10 times straight. If you can do that, then the bow weight it fine.

Side note...this happens when lifting weights. Have someone bench press dumbells for the first time and watch their arms shake and be very unbalanced. The weight is may be no problem but all the smaller muscles have not developed to stabilize the movement. 0 23552 0 0 0 0 189923 0 795 wmramse 1 1 198.160.96.7 1133811243 0 That's an interesting view of it man. It seems you may be more worried about getting the disease from the animal itself than the ticks it's carrying. I just looked this up, and according to the CDC it's theoretically possible to contract the disease from infected blood that gets into your own bloodstream, no such cases have been verified. They also say that ticks must be attached to the skin for 36-48 hours before they can actually transmit the disease. Pretty much every mammal can and will carry ticks - I find them on squirrels all the time - not just 'yotes.

We should all take precautions to protect ourselves from lyme disease, so I can appreciate your concern. I found this link at the CDC that might help folks become more educated about the disease and how it's transmitted. It's a good read, and can help you figure out how best to protect yourself.

With snow on the ground I anticipated a good day. And it didn't let me down.

I had yet to take a deer with my T/C black diamond that my husband had bought for me about 4 years ago and I was anxious to prove it. I had taken one deer with a previous muzzleloader but got rid of it because it failed to fire more than it fired.

To make a long story short, I took a 5 point and a slickhead Saturday morning. To say the least, I'm totally pleased with my black diamond.

I don't have any pics because when I took out the camera I had dead batteries. 10 degrees is a bit hard on them I suppose. wink.gif

I saw alot of deer Saturday. It was a totally awesome day.

I'm tagged out now and I tagged out my husband as well. Nothing remains except my archery tags. And I sure would like to take one with the bow yet this year.

Other than that, I'm not quite through with the ole shotgun as I have a friend and her son with tags that want to hunt the late T-Zone.

The mom and I will be going out for half a day on Thursday and on Saturday I'm taking the boy out for his first hunt ever while his mom has to work. The mom, a first time hunter also, shot her first deer - a fat doe -during the regular season but would like to get another. The boy is chomping the bit to get his first deer now. Correction - better shooters. Being a good shooter and/or a good woodsman doesn't mean you're a good hunter. Sitting in your truck waiting for the dogs to run the deer to you doesn't fit into my own definition of hunting. My opinion. I understand what you're getting at though. And I agree, dog hunters have to be able to shoot better to be able to critically wound a deer running at 40mph, but in my opinion that's never an ethical shot. Again, it's my opinion - take it or leave it. I have yet to see any evidence (around here anyway) that our dog hunters are actually capable of killing successfully on the 1st or 2nd shot. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, just that I've seen no evidence of it.

We could debate this all day or even all week, but the long and short of it is that deer hunting with dogs isn't for me, but it's legal so I won't fight against it. As I said earlier, I have the 'luxury' of hunting where it isn't legal, so I don't HAVE to fight either way. For that very reason it isn't mine to fight for or against. I'll leave that up to those who have a stake in it one way or the other. 0 23593 0 0 0 0 189940 0 795 wmramse 1 1 198.160.96.7 1133816658 0 I have no experience with the .30-30, but according to Remington's ballistics charts it's good out to almost 200 yards. That sounds like pure jealousy talking if you ask me.

Wisconsin has a deer problem. Waupaca county, specifically, where I hunt, has a HUGE deer problem. Shooting alot of deer, particularly does, which is what I have done, is exactly what the DNR wants people to do. Sadly, too many macho men refuse to shoot does in order to help manage the deer herd. And many of these men are QDM advocates.

If the herd should ever decrease to where shooting off all the deer actually becomes a concern, THEN I'll worry about shooting too many. Congrates to the great Lady from Wisconsin!   I love to read what she writes.  I agree with her 100%.  I have been hunting in Wisconsin for over 40 years!  I shot the first deer of my life with a recurve bow at age 14.   If you think that you can come to wisconsin and find good quality bucks wherever you go on public property you are dreaming.  First off we have alot of out of state hunters that hunt here and we are glad to have them.  Most do not own land and hunt the public property.  They are not the people getting the large bucks in P&Y.  Most of the large bucks are taken from PRIVATE property where large tracts of land are leasted or privately owned.  There are large bucks around the state in every county but you have to hunt very hard or just be lucky to see them.  There is a problem with to many deer.  I have seen the average weight of the deer drop over the years from about 145 to 125.  It is because you can only put so many fish in the nfish bowl or they have to change to fit the enviroment they live in.  I also eat game I collect.  I do not buy beef or domesticated birds or any other raised meat.  I love to eat venison and will always shoot to eat.  I havent seen a recipe for horns yet.   Every deer I shoot is a trophy!

In wisconsin we have alot of farms.  Some are large and some are small.
I wonder how you use the QDM on 80 acres!!!  My neighbors dont practice it so the deer I let go they shoot anyway.  QDM is good if you have a ranch or 500 plus acres to keep the deer on your property but even 500 acres isn't enough.  During the rut a buck can roam up to several miles.
Do we put a license plate on the deer from our property so other hunters dont shoot it because it is in the QDM program and someone wants to see how big it can get!  I like to find tracks and follow the deer.  This methode works great in the large northern forest area's nof wisconsin but how many of the hunters go more than a 1/2 mile from the road!  The deer are here but you have to go get them.  I like the way Wisconsin is set up and commend the DNR on a great job!  If you want a big buck then just go pay a guiden to do the work for you and put you on a stand and let you shoot a big P&Y buck.  If that makes you feel better than go for it.
As for now I will stay hunting deer like they have always done in wisconsin!  To feed the family.  God bless you  LadyWIHunter !  Keep up the good work.  Maybe some day we can meet and have a good ol barbeque and talk deer hunting in Wisconsin! laugh.gif

Thanks Hardcore!

Meeting someday and having a barbeque is a great idea! I promise I can talk Wisconsin deer hunting longer than some women can shop! laugh.gif I guess I'm just weird...but I'd rather hunt than shop! Unless its for hunting gear of course. biggrin.gif 0 23380 0 0 0 0 189959 0 1044 BowOnly 1 1 69.150.216.194 1133819126 0 Move...but not too close that you disturb them when setting up. It looks just like their bow vest , I saw a number of their Prostaff wearing them on the newest DVD-The TRUTH 13 Big Bucks. I did not find this item in the new catalog (30th Anniversary Edition). I am sure if they make it available they would sell like hot cakes!! If anyone knows anything or can pass this along to the right people at Primos that would be great. 4 tracks
1- 22 mins of small animal distress
2 - 20 + mins of jack/snowshoe rabbit
3 - 20 mins of long range distress.
4 - 4 mins of audio commentary...

They say in the listing that you can use it as a stand alone calling disc, just plug it in and let it play...Only cost $9 US , so I will see what I get for that price.....Unlike others, I can't afford the FoxPro (even thought I would love to own one), so I will use my discman and a set of speakers that I bought from Radio Shack (computer speakers)....

Once I get it and try it I will tell you guys if its worth spending a ten spot or not.....

Not like I will be throwing away my mouth calls just cause this thing is on the way......

Product comes out of Stevensville, MI ( Help me out here, is that Mississippi / Missouri/ Michigan?????) 0 23555 0 0 0 0 189963 0 2375 LadyWIhunter 0 1 62.20.82.196 1133819664 0 Thanks!

I haven't seen a coyote this year. I usually do so thats a bit unusual. I did see a gray fox and a huge raccoon. The coon came within 10 yards and checked me out. ~L~ 0 23604 0 0 0 0 189964 0 137 T.B. 1 1 70.20.89.117 1133819760 0 How bout I'm tired of hearing about the Colts. Manning is a good QB, but put him in the cold and he wont do so well. Ethically deer hunting with dogs is no different than anything else.
And contrary to what you may think the deer DO NOT cross the same places year after year. ideally in SC dog hunting has a place b/c our woods are very thick and our deer are very smart and fast. there is not much of a difference b/n man driving and dog driving. In sc a lot of our woods you cannot even man drive because of the terrain we have. 0 23593 0 0 0 0 189973 0 4173 dgbigo 1 1 152.163.100.65 1133823090 0 I had used a white oak acorn atrractant scent several years ago and had great success with it. I have not been able to find it anywhere.I don't remeber the brand name but it has a sweet nutty smell to it and it was also in an oil base. If anyone has any info or any good alternatives it would be greatly appreciated. 0 23611 attrractant scents? 1 0 0 0 189974 0 4274 Dosse 0 1 64.139.246.51 1133823208 0 I have only missed one deer due to yardage error, but when i was younger i missed numerous deer because of getting nervous and just pretty much forgetting what i was doin. As i progressed as a hunter i learned to control my self better and concentrate on a small spot when i aim on a deer and have not missed now in quite some time. But like mentioned above there are many things that can go wrong between the release of your arrow and the point of impact. Thats what makes killing game with a bow such a worthwhile experience 0 23585 0 0 0 0 189975 0 4417 bigbuckbill 1 0 66.189.39.149 1133823810 0 CONGRATS on the ML kill 0 23604 0 0 0 0 189976 0 4417 bigbuckbill 1 0 66.189.39.149 1133823893 0 YA it might be u should try it it has more load in it you might have a better chance with a bigger spread..
