A trainer I know give me some advice on how to work with my dog. Start out by taking your dog for a walk and clapping very loudly. Do this for about a week and then get a couple short pieces of 2x4 and clap them together. Do that until the dog is comfortable with it. Then take the dog out with a friend, have a 22 and have your friend stand about 20 yards away. Have them call your dog and when it gets about half way shoot the 22 away from the dog. Work up to shooting the 22 as you stand closer to your dog. Gradually work up to your shotgun starting at longer distances until you can shoot right beside her. Good luck.

I agree with starting slow with a small caliber. Other than that I can't be of much help. Sorry.
This question did bring up some memories though. I do not have a hunting dog yet, but I take my Boxer with me whenever I go to my hunting properties during the summer. Since he also goes with us on all of our camping trips I wanted him to get used to loud noise (gun fire). From the very beginning I would light fireworks or shoot around him. He never acted scared or shy. The funny thing is, one day I got my old 22 out, cleaned it up, and took it with us to do a little plinkin'. He was shy as could be around that little rifle. I couldn't believe it! it seemed like it was the sight of it not the sound that bothered him. I would pick it up off of the tailgate and he would crawl under the truck. I was laughing so hard I could barely aim!

Sorry I can't help, but MOJO's story reminds me of my coon dog. We could be out hunting and the dog doesn't care about the gun. If we are just at the house target practicing the dog will crawl in any hole it can. Sorry to change the subject.

Get a tape of gun shots and play it by the dog all the time it should get use to it. If it is truly a gun shy dog then you migt not ever cure it but it is worth a try. Dont use a real gun use the tapes some dogs will get use to the noise and still be shy when they see the gun. Good luck.

We had a gun shy dog growing up. She was a black lab and her name was Lady. My Dad worked with her for MONTHS trying to help her with her fear. Lady LOVED to retrieve anything and everything and what finally broke her of being gun shy was her favorite toy.

Dad would put her in a sit command at his side while he shot clays. At first she would whimper or run and hide. After a while Dad decided to try something. She had no problems fetching so he decided to use her favorite toy. He would shoot and then throw her toy. It took TIME and PATIENCE but after a while she would fetch with no problems. She knew that if she wanted that toy she would have to sit nice and wait for the shot...... After a while, she could hardly wait for my Dad to pull up and shoot. Lady is gone now, but she was a great dog. I believe all gun shy dogs can be broken with the right training. It's all about positive reinforcement.

I Shot the bb gun around her yesterday and she was good with it but didnt like want to get close to the gun. The noise she was fine with.
Then I gave her treats when she came close to the gun. Then I got the paintball gun and sat her about 5 feet away from it and gave her a treat everytime she sat thru the shot. Then I took her out in the woods and shot it in there. She was ok with the paintball gun so I will stick with that for a couple days and then go to fire crackers, then 22, then shotgun.

>>>> Gun Shyness is 100% preventable! I only know of one gundog worth his salt that was ever broken of it. He was placed with a female pro trainer who had lots of time and patience. Two or three other pros had recommended the owner shoot the dog or give it away as a pet..... I've raised and trained my own gun dogs for years, and have never had a gun shy pup. I usually start by banging feed bowls together while their eating. Do it easy at first, and then get louder and more aggressive as they get used to it. Once they are conditioned to the noise, take 'em out individually and release a pigeon or two. While they're absorbed in chasing the bird, fire a starter pistol(light loads). Lots of praise is the key. Just go slow........... Always make it fun!
