Well then, I guess I will post my small game success so far this season. This past weekend I went on a squirrel hunting camping trip and had a decent time. It wasn't as good as I would have hoped but I still had fun. I bagged 2 gray squirrels, 4 red squirrels, and even shot a chipmunk. My brother got 4 grays and a number of reds. My cousin shot 1 gray, 2 reds, and he also shot a chipmunk. I am hoping to get out this weekend to chuck some lead at some crows and maybe even go out for another round of squirrel hunting.

I saw about a 15 grey cat squirrels while scouting, and I got a shot at 6 of them with my 77/22 ruger. That was some good eating!!I can't wait til it cools off so I can put my rat terriers on them. laugh.gif

Hey guys do your squirrels get wolves? That's what we call them down here.It is a worm/parasite,that lives underneath the squirrels hide, and looks like a big knot on their sides. The one's I shot last weekend didn't have any,but it's common for them to have wolves mainly in Aug.,but sometimes in Sept.,and early Oct.

If so,do you know what causes it,and where it goes once it leaves the host body?I just know what they look like,I don't know where they come from,or where they go.Thanks in advance. biggrin.gif

RC,

I haven't seen a squirrel with wolves yet, but our bunnies get 'em. I didn't realize that squirrels can get them too, but I guess they can if you're seeing it. My Dad taught me years ago to not even bother hunting rabbits until after the 1st frost, which kills the wolves. I usually wait a couple of weeks after the 1st frost to make sure they're all healed up. Like I said, I haven't seen any squirrels up this way that had wolves early in the season, but I may have to push back my small game hunting 'til after the 1st frost. I usually combine my early-season deer scouting with a few squirrel hunts, but really I'm not very good at either :? I'm getting pretty good at scouting though, but I don't know anyone that can take me squirrel hunting and show me some tips. My arkansashunting.net buddies are getting together this weekend for a squirrel hunt, so I might join them and see what I can learn smile.gif

If wolves look like a big black grub then I shot a squirrel this past weekend that had one. It was the first time I have ever had one on a squirrel. So I looked it up to see what it was and they are actually called warbles. They are the larva stage of the bot fly. As far as waiting till the first frost to kill them off, there is no point in this because the larva do not harm the quality of the meat. The only thing they penetrate is into the skin they don't even touch the meat, so after skinning the squirrels there is nothing wrong with eating the meat. Hope this helps. If you want more info on them, just do a google search for Warbles and you can get the whole story on them.

I'd like to wish everyone hunting pheasant, quail, etc. a great season this year! As much as I love deer hunting, and a I do a ton, pheasant hunting has always been and will always be my favorite hunting of all. That said, my heart just isn't in it right now. Two seasons ago I had to retire my hunting partner of the last 12 years - my chocolate lab Mocha. Saying this with pride we should all have of our four footed hunters, she was the best pheasant dog I've ever seen. She was not a pointing lab; rather she was a true flusher. But I hunted with her for 11 years and I got to be able to read her body language so well that a point wasn't necessary. Also, she worked in close so when she did flush a bird it was almost always in good gun range.

If you'll indulge me a bit more, I'd like to share the story of her last hunt two falls ago. Opening day, I took Mocha and three friends out to my best pheasant spot. Two of the guys also brought their dogs, both young males, one golden retriever and one fox red lab. Both proved to be pretty much worthless (no offense guys if you're reading this!) and had to spend most of the morning in the truck. But what a day Mocha had! Remember Michael Jordan winning the championship in his last game with the Bulls? It was like that for Mocha. We had four hunters, each with a bag limit of 3 birds. The results? 12 birds in a little less than 2 hours, a good share of which she flushed and retrieved. What a way to retire!

Why did I retire her? That day, despite me doing what I could to get her in shape beforehand, pretty much did her in for about 3 weeks. I could just tell her old body, riddled with arthritis, wouldn't put up with the stress any longer. She's still around, enjoying life - but her days of work and play are long gone.

Blessings to you all this year. Be safe. Thanks for letting me ramble. smile.gif

That's it!I didn't know it was called a bot fly.I'll research that.Along with so many other words, down here in the south.I'm sure they were translated from warbles to wolves somewhere along the lines laugh.gif .Thanks squirrel buster.Great stories guys, nice pheasants your dad got hunthard.

Went out this morning and got a limit of 4 ruffs in 2 hours.

Got this picture of the dog on point after limiting. Flushed 8 more birds on the way to the car.
