Anybody out there do any hunting with a handgun? Varmints or big game? What caliber and type of gun?
campmeat
ricochet,
I've been trying for a couple of years to connect with a pistol. Shot at bear. Killed one deer so far.{ 44 Redhawk } I use the T/C Encore: 450 Marlin w/muzzlebreak, 454 Casull w/muzzlebreak and 308 all with 15 inch barrels with scopes. It's fun and alot harder than it looks on TV. I like it because you have to be very steady handed and accurate. I missed bear last year and this year. But it was a real rush. You can go out to 200 yards easy. I bought a 500 mag in Magnum Research, but haven't gotten it yet. Can't wait... Hope this might help out a bit.

I've fiddled around with handguns for years, taken a couple deer, coyotes, bobcats, and a cougar with my handguns. Hard times, (divorce, etc.) have trimmed my collection, all I have now is a S&W Model 41 .22 and a Colt Python .357 Both shoot better than I do.

Before the bunny huggers raped our hunting rights here in Oregon I used to chase the hounds, packing a handgun is a lot easier than a rifle while running through the brush after dogs. ****, I miss it.
campmeat
ricochet,
I used to have a Python I bought 25 + years ago..........God, I wish I still had it. Traded it for a camper. How smart is that ? I killed a Bobcat yesterday with my 22-250, what a mess. Shot the back end off of her. 3/4 mount maybe. My wife told me I was dumb for not taking my 22 mag Blackhawk with me, geeze, what do I now ?

campmeat-
I bought my Python back in '76, thought it cost a lot then, its still worth what I paid for it. But its not for sale. biggrin.gif I bought a Safariland shoulder holster for it, its so comfortable I forget I have it on. I used to pack both the Python and the S&W when we ran hounds, had to be ready for anything, cougar, bobcat, coon, whatever they treed.
About the bobcat, you'd be surprised what a good taxidermist can hide. Usually the hide might seem like there's a heck of a hole but you can pull the tattered edges of the hole together, stitch carefully, and its not so bad. Were you thinking rug or lifesize? All else fails, you got a good excuse to go get another one.

I might go hand gun hunting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a super redhawk 44 with the 9.5 inch barrel. Also have a smith 41 mag. a colt and smith 357. Glock 40 cal and a ruger 22/22 mag super six. I love to shoot them all. Have shot all kind of critters but no big game.
campmeat
ricochet,
I want a live mount but........................I'll find out tomorrow. Taxidermist says he can correct my hide. Hope so. Wanted a cat forever. I think I bought my Python around the same time, $400 comes to mind. Sound about right ? Expensive then as now !
I go hunting ALL the time. It's a disease for me. Can't get enuogh.

butterbean7008,
My wife is from Cocoa Fl. not Cocoa Beach. I love handguns, well, all guns. Bought an AR 15 DPMS .223 last year. COOL gun. I have a very good friend that is a Border Patrol Agent. We go up on the Canadian border where the ranchers have claimed county roads as theirs for years. Guess what? Wrong says my friend. There is an old mine there that is full of these little ground squirrels. AR 15 does wonders on these little Canadian Terrorists. Geeze, a Federal Agent acting like me. I'm 51, but feel 18......Yikes.

Sorry for your loss. I lost my Dad in Feb. 04
BIG DOG
I HAVE ONLY TAKEN SQUIRRELS WITH A HANDGUN. I HAVE A RUGER SINGLE SIX WITH A 4 5/8 INCH BARREL AND WITH INTERCHANGEALBE CYLINDERS. IT THE BEST .22 HANDGUN ON THE MARKET BAR NONE. THESE LITTLE GUNS ARE TOUGH AND ACCURATE. I ALSO HAVE A RUGER BISLEY BLACKHAWK SS IN .44 REM MAG WITH A 5 1/2 INCH BARREL THAT I WOULD LIKE TO USE FOR BLACK BEAR THIS COMING YEAR. I SHOOT 300 GRAIN FEDERAL CAST CORES THROUGH IT AND HAVE NO DOUBT THAT IT WOULD TAKE CARE OF ANY ANIMAL ON THIS CONTINENT. YES, INCLUDING THE BIG BROWNS IN ALASKA. I WOULD LOVE TO GET THE RUGER BISLEY HUNTER IN .44 REM MAG AND SCOPE IT WITH A LEUPOLD AND USE IT FOR DEER, BUT I HAVE TO GET RID OF ONE AND IT IS MAKING IT HARD TO ACTUALLY DO THAT.
ricochet
I've taken a couple blacktails with the .357 but wouldn't feel comfortable moving up to any larger gme with that caliber. Squirrel hunting (ground squirrels) is a blast with a 22 handgun, a real test of marksmanship. The highlight of some of our spring bear hunts were the mid-day squirrel hunts while the bears napped. 8)

I was interested in going handgun hunting but i am not sure of the law in Pennsylvania because i am only 15. Does anyone know if I am allowed to go hunting with a handgun? Because i saw this thing on the pa game commission web site and it said something about needing something called a sportsmans carry permit to carry a handgun, but i am not sure if this is just for when you are in a car(which i would not be carrying it in the car anyway) or if it is needed for carrying it in the woods too. It would be just for small game and i would be going with my dad. I have a ruger single six .22/.22 mag. If anyone knows or knows someone under 18 that hunts with a handgun please post a reply. Thanks
deerslayer23
It is illegal for us minors to carry one in MI.

If you can, find someone to take you the first year, or at least a couple of times. Duck hunting is over everywhere now, so talk to some of the guys you work with. I've found most of the people that work at Cabela's to know pretty much what they're talking about, or will find another employee that does. One word of advice, don't go and buy a lot of cheap junk just so you can go by yourself. Build up your decoys, camo, and blinds over time with at least middle of the road stuff. If I was going to buy one call, I'd buy some sort of timber call. They're not as loud, and in my opinion, more versatile. My reccomendations are the Primos Yo' Sista or the echo polycarb timber. You can (and will) build up more calls as you go. Kansas has some great goose hunting, but be advised that goose hunting is even more expensive than duck hunting. Once again, try and find someone that can take you. Good luck with joining a great sport. 0 15253 0 0 0 0 115421 0 3081 bowhunterinPA 0 1 70.97.146.36 1107739808 0 I would like to take the opportunity to let everyone know that we visited the PA sportmans show today and there was a booth there for Primos. Make about 20 and set them out in front of you. Your shots will be like shooting landing mallards.
Our best crow hunting day was in a old pumpking patch with about 400 hundred frozen broken open pumpkins. Middle of Nov. 7 hours of almost steady shooting, four of us shot 14 boxes of shells. Well over 100 crows by the time we were done. The farmer absolutely loved us for this. Her house would look like the movie the birds before we started hunting there.
Another very memorable day was in thick fog with about a 20 yard visibilty. Amazing how fast a crow can come in when you can only see 20 yards. It was pretty intense for a couple hours.

The silhoutes make all the difference in the world and are cheap with a jigsaw a drawing and a can of black spray paint. I think they are all interchangable. Your bolt should be 2 1/2 inches long or so. It should have a spacer washer. Take out the spacer. If not, get a shorter bolt. Won't hurt anything. Or email www.foxridgeoutfitters.com and ask them. They'll know for sure. Or, www.eabco.com Another good source.
