I'm sure this question has been asked before so I appologize if I'm beating a dead horse here. I have been planning on switching to spitfires from my thunderheads as soon as I use up the my last 2 thunderheads. I am wanting to switch because I have seen the holes that the spitfires make and have helped track a few deer that have been shot with them and the blood trails are great. I don't have any problems with the flight of my thunderheads, my bow is well tuned and they shoot just fine for me but I like what I have seen the spitfires do. I was talking to my brother last night and he just switched to carbon arrows this year and said he was going back to aluminiums because he didn't get good penatration on a deer he killed yesterday. It occured to me that I might not get as good of penetration with mechanicals if I put them on my carbon arrows. I just switched to carbons this year myself. I am shooting 368 grain carbons at 265 fps and I am getting 57 pounds KE. Is anyone shooting something similar to my setup with mechanicals? Any penetration problems? Any advice would be appreciated.

Great question dino. Allow me to ask a related question. What's the formula for calculating KE? I remember seeing it before hunting season, but couldn't find it.

This is copied from a friend's (D-Man) post on another site:
Kinetic energy is the energy due to motion. When an object is moving, it has a kinetic energy measured in joules by the formula KE = 1/2 Mv2. (KE is kinetic energy, M is the mass of the object in kilograms, and v is the velocity of the object in meters per second, m/s).
Also, here is a link to a KE calculator on Goldtips website:

The only mechanical/expandable broadheads I have any faith in are Rockets, to be very, very honest. I've been shooting the Rocket Miniblaster 3-blade for about 7-8 years now and have not lost an animal yet, that I've hit with them....deer, black bear, turkeys. That said, I feel a rather heavy arrow is adviseable, for good penetration. Still, shot placement is the key to success, not some magic broadhead! -Jim

Thanks, Jim. I think I will use what I have for now and try something else after bow season.

Personally I like the mechanical broadhead for lack of needed tuning. I started with Spitfires, tried the rocky mountain expandable which I did not care for and have gone back to spitfires. I agree with the others that shot placement determines alot to do with a pass through shot. I have killed many whitetails without pass through shots in my time. Just something to think about...This year I switched to a new arrow ( i have always shot carbon, have not been bow hunting but about 4 years) I am shooting a vital hunter. They are a carbon but with a almost plastic coating which adds a little weight but is also supposed to help arrow pass through, acts like a lube when it hits the blood. Who knows? shoot what you have confidence in, that is the real key.
