My Dad called me and said that he had three packs of coyotes howling up on his upper fields and wondered if I could come out and try and get them. So I called up my brother, gave him the intel and we headed out to our Dad's place.

The moon was pretty bright out, with occasional cloud cover that darkened and brightened the area as it passed by the almost full moon. The wind was perfect for where we were going to be setting up so we made up a game plan on the fly and headed up as quietly as we could.

The spot that we decided on was underneath a treestand that we effectionately call the killing tree. This tree sit's at the end of a hedge row and overlooks four different fields.

I sat down directly under the tree while my brother set up about a hundred yards up wind of me in another hedge row. We let things calm down for about ten minutes or so and my brother opens up with a female inviatation howl. He does a series of five howls and stops calling.

I thought that I saw something come out to the edge of the field, directly across from me, about 150 yds away but I wasn't sure. I thought that my eyes were playing tricks on me because everytime the clouds passed by the moon, it looked like something moving in the field. Convinced that it was my eyes playing tricks on me I decided not to turn on my killlight to investigate.

A couple of minutes later my brother starts doing the female invitation howl again. He did another three calls and stopped. The clouds parted again, making the field light up again. This time, it also highlighted a black shape making it's way towards my brothers position, but circling towards me. That's why I was on the downwind side.

Well, it got out to about what I thought was about fifty yards or so when I clicked on my light. I couldn't believe it. There stood a grey fox that had come into coyote vocals! I put the crosshairs on her shoulder and touched one off. She immediately dropped and my brother, thinking that I had shot a coyote, started ki-ying.

After a few minutes with no takers, I get up and walk towards my prize. My brother shouts out, "Did you get it?" I answered him with a "Heck ya I shot a grey fox!" He didn't believe me. He couldn't believe that a grey fox had come into coyote vocals either.

Here she is...beautiful little female grey fox. My handloads for my AR left about a quarter size exit hole but you couldn't even find the entrance, until it started bleeding from it. All, in all, a great night. It took longer to drive out to my Dad's place than it did for the actual hunt. One and done. Love it.

Thanks all! I think that grey foxes are really cool looking. I love the black lines that go up the back of their tails.

That's cool! Seems like a grey fox is just about fearless. I called one in to 6 steps before. That's crazy that she came in to the howls! Nice lookin animal! Congrats!

Nice looking fox John, I just got my gray back a few weeks ago from the taxidermist. It was a young one like yours I take it. Normally the tail is just as big as the body but it wasn't the case with mine.

Congrats!
