I just finished watching the new installment of the Duck Commander Television show.
It was mentioned that in days past, no duck hunter would shoot a duck in the air. It was considered true duck hunting skill to get the birds to light on the water. When I was a young man, I was told it was unsportsmanlike-like to kill birds on the water. Which is it? A: Yes, it is OK to shoot birds on the water B: No, only a person of ill repute and/or low birth would engage in such despicable behavior -------------------- “The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter can not be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.”

I'll water swat'em in a heart beat. Do you run a deer out of a food plot before you shoot it? When you call a turkey up do you flush it before you shoot it? Part of the object of the game is to fool the duck, and if you sit them down in the decoys you have done just that, so take advantage of the easier shot and kill ducks.

I don't go out with the intention of ground pounding my birds but it does happen and I have done it on several occasions. I would much prefer to take them on the wing as opposed to on the water/ground.

I saw the same show. I understood it to say that they let them lite and then jumped them up. If they lite I generally jump them up then shoot them when get up off the water. A duck on the water is harder to kill because there vitals are under the water. If I have a new hunter with me I will let them have a crack at them first. that gets them up. LOL

As with most questions of morality, let your conscience guide you. If it makes you feel bad, don't do it.

I strictly jump shoot ducks/geese. I guess I'm blessed to have the luxury of so much public land that I can just drive up and down the rivers or to the lake and find birds. I'll put a good stalk on 'em and usually if they're ducks and I storm the bank I'll wait till they fly....as they usually do anyway. Geese are a whole different story. If I put a good stalk on some geese and I storm the bank and there's still honkers on the water...they get shot at. My favorite is when they're feet are still on the water and I fold 'em. I love that

Watch it again. They said they would let them land, then jump them before shooting.
