Few Hunters have had the opportunity to get to know a deer over the years the way I got to know Hightower. The deer has been on the top end of the hit list for several years, and has managed to elude us every year. Hightower had become somewhat of a mythical creature to us. It seems he was only seen in early mornings or in dense fog materializing and disappearing at will, like a ghost. At one time I had him walking directly at me down a trail in a dense fog. He stopped behind a bushy tree and worked a scrape at 15 yards. I waited for him to come out of the other side but he never did, it seems he just vanished. It seemed like that for story after story on hightower adding to his reputation. He fequented trail cams on the farm but only at midnight or 1:00 am etc. There were higher scoring deer on the farm but everyone wanted Hightower because of his reputation and he just looked cool. This year he was 6.5 or 7.5 yrs old. I have some foodplots just down the hill from my house that I hunt when I'm in a hurry or running late. Hightower called this area home throughout his life. I've hunted him hard so many times without luck I had just given up on him. It had become a common saying when someone was hunting that area, good luck and kill ol' hightower. My best friend, Jarrett, called me up Monday Nov. 15. and asked if he could come over and hunt the foodplot behind my house. I told him I didn't care and that I had a stand hung in the foodplot already, and to kill Ol' Hightower. An hour before dark a doe came off the hillside and into the foodplot 50 yards away. Just as he was about to kill her she looked over her shoulder, and sure enough here came Hightower. He saundered down the hill and into the foodplot without a care in the world. Jarrett pumped one in the shoulder at 50 yards. Hightower ran up the hill about 100 yards and crashed. I was at the house working with some colts when I heard him shoot. Before long here he came with a big grin. He told me he shot a doe and he needed help tracking. When we topped over the hill and I saw Ol' Hightower laying there I couldn't help but feel some sadness and admiration at a brute of a deer and one heck of an advisary who gave me the slip time and time again. Here's to the Hightowers everywhere!

He was 6 inches around the base, 24 inch main beams, 11 and 10 inch tines, 19 inside. Mainframe 8 with two stickers. Scored 156 gross.
