Here in Indiana this is the law passed last year:

Rifles with pistol cartridges
Rifles must fire a cartridge with a bullet of .357-inch diameter or larger; have a minimum case length of 1.16 inches; and have a maximum case length of 1.625 inches.
These rifle cartridges can be used only during the deer firearms season.
Some cartridges that are legal include the following:
.357 Magnum
.38-40 Winchester
.41 Magnum
.41 Special
.44 Magnum
.44 Special
.44-40 Winchester
.45 Colt
.454 Casull
.458 SOCOM
.480 Ruger
.475 Linebaugh
.50 Action Express
.500 S&W
Some illegal rifle cartridges for deer hunting are the .30-30 Winchester, .444 Marlin and .45-70 Govt.

What are some rifles I can use & whats the maximum and average distance from a pistol cartridge to a 12 gauge?

I hunt with a muzzleloader and use a 45 cal. bullet and a sabot, the same bullet as a .45 colt, the ballistic charts show it really dropping after 200 yards. I also shoot hornady slugs and the box says 0 @ 150, 6 inches low at 200. That is at 2000 fps, you wont get a pistol cartridge to do that. I have a 45 colt and i reload myself and I know you cant buy very many factory loads that qualify a 45 colt to be used here in illinois, you have to have 500 ft./lbs energy and I have to reload mine at 1000 fps with a 240 grain bullet. Most factory loads are cowboy loads and dont have enough energy.

Not real often that one gets to see a pure stroke of legislative genius. 30-30 illegal to hunt deer? That cartridge probably killed more deer and elk than anyother cartridge.

Depends if you want a lever action or a single shot, but brickit name the two manufactures I would choose for a pistol cartridge gun. I would get a lever action 44 mag. Fairly popular gun and decent range.
