I'll probably be shooting a winchester model 1300 pump shotgun for doves and I was wondering what choke tube would be a good one for them. We have 3 different ones. Full, improved cylinder, and modified. Is there one that is better than the rest or is it just personal pattern preference. Should I just get out and see how they all shoot? Any help is appreciated

You could go out and shoot them all to see which has the best pattern for doves...I just use the Factory Choke that came with my 870. Modified I beleive, Seems to work just fine.

Well I don't know if i'd need a wider pattern or a more compact one. But I think the shotgun came with the 3 choke tubes.

Well, depends on the situation. I use a full and a modified where I hunt, usually just a full unless most of the birds are getting close, but if they are practically landing on me, which sometimes happens, then its the Improved cylinder. If you are walking corn fields or something like that, I'd go with the full, you can always let them get a little further so your pattern can open up, but if they get out of range of your IC, you will not hit them. Hope that helped a bit.
In other words, I'd use a full or modified, never had a use for an IC. Here is something you can try too, draw a couple targets the size of doves, pattern your gun at 15-25-30-35 and maybe 40 yards. Try them all, see which pattern you like best, or you can go to the skeet range and bust some clays, if you can bust clays, you can bust doves, just find the one you like the best. Hope this helped, and sorry if it didn't. This post has been edited by Goose Bonker: May 20 2007, 01:28 AM -------------------- |

Well I went up the a local club range and did a little sporting clay. I did pretty good for a first timer. Missed about 6 out of 25. I had the modified choke in and it seemed to work pretty good but the clay's didn't really explode. I didn't try the full but I could probably go next weekend and try the full. It's really fun but my cheek really hurts. My shoulder hurts a little too but that's just part of shooting shotguns.
