Well I was just wondering what kind of dog everyone had. I have 2 german shorthairs and a beagle. I would have to say that the german shoerthair is the BEST dog you can get for ANY kind of bird hunting, we even took our oldest shorthair out turkey hunting just to break the flock up. But even besides hunting they make a great family dog. We are going to start raising them with the puppy we have now.

P.S...give me any suggestions with training new pups.

My whole family uses English Pointers. My grandfather has been using them since the 40s i believe and for upland birds that is all our family uses. I have hunted with a few shorthairs and weinmers...but the best that I know of outside those belongs to one of my friends in NE. He has a lab/grey hound mix that is excellent!!! Don't know how it all worked out for him but that dog is in my top 5 i have ever hunted with.

Hey if your shorthairs are so darn good then why would you have to train em cool.gif . Just giving you a hard time about that. Remember a dog is only as good as the bloodline or the trainer makes him/her. Some would even argue a mutt is better than some pure bread hunting dogs, I have read some articles where people swear by their mutts. I have a wonderful lab that gets the job done day in and day out for me. I am usually hunting huns, pheasants, grouse, rabbits and she gets em all to flush/run. Anyways what I am trying to say is if you train em right and treat em right any breed of dog will do great. I have only trained one dog completly on my own and I use the Game dog DVD to help me out. It says on the cover for training the retriever for upland birds and waterfowl, but I am sure it would work for any bread of dog. Very good DVD and has worked wonders for me, good luck training.

I have a Beagle... Well actually hes a blue tick Beagle. Hes crossed between the two! He loves to run them rabbits!! And he also loves to play fetch with his ball!

I had a Redbone... She was my coonhound. She past away in December on the 21st of 06. I got her when i was 6 and she was just a pup...Now i am 16 and she died at the age of 10. I miss her alot, but she is in a better place now, and i have many many memories of all the hunts, playin fetch with a sticks in the yard, and the day we got her, and i hold those close to me and i'll never forget her.

I plan on getting 2 Redbone Pups here soon and start training them basic commands and then i plan on training them on bein coon hounds.

I have Britteny Spaniels they love the gambel quail out here in arizona, they also do good on the pheasant. My female loves to dove hunt with me and she is due to have a litter of pups the first part of march. I had a beagle when I was younger living in southern Michigan he could run a rabbit in a circle ten times before it would get into the hole. I also had a blue tick and a redbone that loved to hunt coons.

I had a Shorthair up until a few years ago. I had to put him down. It was the worst day of my adult life. I still miss him. He was a great pheasant dog. Now I've got a Lab. He's a good dog too.

I have two dogs. My big dog is a blackbear/St. Bernard/Lab mix. Just kidding about the black bear part but he's about that big. 147lbs. biggrin.gif My other dog is a little black and white lab mix that I think has some border collie or something else in him. He's a freakin crack baby and when we started hunting, was TERRIBLY gunshy. He'd retrieve until he dropped though. One day when I came home, I took one of my dead Mallards, put it a few feet away and told him to get it and bring it to me. (Bring it here, is the command I used.) One afternoon, I took him and the big dog out jumpshooting with me and when I shot my first mallard, he grabbed it and brought it back to me.... blink.gif since then, he's retrieved about 8 ducks for me and I can't wait for next season to try him out on upland game. He's really come around and I didn't have to do much but play fetch with him. Good luck training your pups.
