I'm not even kidding, no one except my dad and his buddy believe me ecause they were right next to me. I hit a muley buck at about 750 yards. It was last day and I was letting it all hang out. I had to aim about a deer length ahead of him, and about 8 foot over him, but whe it hit him he stopped, wobbled and dropped. I could barely believe myself.

Blake, with your gun, i think a confident shot would be between 300-450 yards, where me and you hunt, that is the farthest me and you would shot down here in Mississippi.

It's not the gun, it's the hunter. It's all about how confident you are with your ability and your gun. You will usually disappoint your gun before it disappoints you.

Of course, some hunters have self imposed range limits. It could be from confidence, or as a personal challenge. I use my .270 for blackbear but I'd like to keep the shot to a maximum of 200 yards if I can.

The .270 Win is a great long-range caliber. It isn't as flat shooting as some, and doesn't have as much knock-down power as some, but it's a great compromise of both characteristics. Some even say it's the perfect deer caliber.
Most gun writers will preach a personal minimum of 1000 ft-lbs of kinetic energy for whitetails and 1500 ft-lbs for elk, so if you decide to impose that personal limitation on yourself, just visit the website of whatever ammo you shoot and look up a ballistics chart. Generally speaking though, 500 yards is about the max you can go with a .270 and stay reasonably close to that limit for deer. Elk you're looking at about 300 yards. -------------------- Wes

My .270 is sighted in at 200yds and only drops 37inches at 500 with over 1000 ft-lbs of energy. This summer I nailed a woodchuck at 525 yds. It was beautiful
